For the last 2 weeks I've been running a "fun to play around with" Glitch-soc Mastodon instance on a former work laptop that they didn't want back :bloblaugh:

Purged Windows and setup Linux server, attached a SSD and boom! Unfort the disk is only ~300GB is not much wiggle room

It's running quite smooth, except for some 'DNS issues' at the start, maybe IP ban or something🤔Been using my single letter domain 'u.fail' for this btw if anyone is interested

Think we'll go with Glitch on mstdn soon

@stux crazy I just set up my new instance here based on glitch-soc with custom themes etc. yesterday

stux,
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

@brayd haha cool! :nkoCool: what themes did you use?

brayd,
@brayd@glitch.braydmedia.de avatar

@stux look it up on my instance it's below the version note

You can see it in action there, too.

But in general it's https://github.com/nileane/TangerineUI-for-Mastodon

Note that the installation for glitch-soc differs from that for vanilla Mastodon, but it's easy.

Only thing that confused me about glitch-soc at first is that there are no tags and that you're just basically on the main branch and check out there. They have a permanent issue open for when something with breaking changes is added though so that should be fine when updating since it's basically as far as I have understood it just git fetch, pull, restarting sidekiq, reloading web and done. (Unless anything breaking is introduced and noted). Not yet sure if my guess in that regards is 100% correct but I think so 😂

Oh and my instance is using the purple variant of that theme since it's very close to the vanilla UI but with tweaks.

Character limit is set to 4000 chars on my instance and it's working fine with all apps I tested. :verified_blobCat:

@brayd That looks quite nice! thanks!

When updating be also aware when there are migrations/asset updates for recompile

Should be very easy to spot them you pull new code 😉

brayd,
@brayd@glitch.braydmedia.de avatar

@stux hm well based on which indicator can you see them? 👀

stux,
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

@brayd Migrations are stored in that folder when pulling code 😆 And for FE just run recompile, if nothing has changed nothing happens otherwise you'll get new compiled assets

brayd,
@brayd@glitch.braydmedia.de avatar

@stux ok so to be always on the safe side you can just always recompile assets in the process and you should be fine then? 😂

I read that sometimes it may be needed to restart streaming. When is that the case?

stux,
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

@brayd Correct!

Personally I almost always restart all services, just for a "refresher"! Can't really hurt except for a few seconds of downtime

brayd,
@brayd@glitch.braydmedia.de avatar

@stux got it! Thanks! 🙏🏻 Those information helped a lot lol

stux,
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

@brayd Most welcome!

And ofc the most important of them all..

backup your database before migrations, always :blobcatgiggle:

I've never had an issue with Masto migrations but you don't want to get in such a situation

@tuhgy@sharkey.world avatar

@stux fedi-hopping is the new distro-hopping?

stux,
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

@tuhgy :blobcatgiggle: nah, we don't swtich that often!

mkljczk,
@mkljczk@fediverse.pl avatar

Didn’t mstdn.social already use glitch before?

stux,
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

@mkljczk In the past yes!

andypiper,
@andypiper@macaw.social avatar

@stux specific features you’re preferring over mainline?

stux,
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

@andypiper I kinda like the option to set a little longer post limit 😉

(env vars within glitch)

Otherwise I have seen a lot of improvement in the glitch-soc specific FE "theme panel". It's something small but can be very handy! :ed_grin:

For smaller instances the optional option to add boosts and/of replies to public timelines can also be a big win! (not for us though)

Otherwise I am totally in love with 'vanilla' 😉

This just gets requested a looad

andypiper,
@andypiper@macaw.social avatar

@stux yeah, I understand the post limit configurability being useful, for sure. Just being curious, thanks for sharing what you’re enjoying in there!

stux,
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

@andypiper It's just some super small things and could be easily changed within the code ofc but since Glitch is so very well maintained it's safe

Most welcome! :cat_hug_triangle:

andypiper,
@andypiper@macaw.social avatar

@stux I heard both developers are extremely awesome, yes!

stux,
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

@andypiper Ohh yes! Very much :blobcathearts:

patricus,

@stux glitch sounds, glitchy, better don't!

stux,
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

@patricus :blobcatgiggle: it's not really

ssamulczyk,
@ssamulczyk@mstdn.social avatar

@stux The question: does it break client apps compatibility? :bulbasaurroll:

stux,
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

@ssamulczyk Nop! All will be the same except for more toot chars, and some other sm0ll extras, mostly on the web UI

ssamulczyk,
@ssamulczyk@mstdn.social avatar

@stux I can stand behind more characters. It was easy to fit into 1 toot at the beginning, but now I constantly have to divide my toots into smaller ones or redact to make it in the limit...😂
