Given that Trump has made it clear he wants Big Oil to finance him as ends democracy and anything we've ever done to fight climate change, this is a good time to say:

I'm looking for one person tonight to help me flip both statehouses in Arizona, the smartest political donation you can make in 2024.

@lolgop I happily donated, just now. I agree with you about the importance of #Arizona to the country as a whole. And, now that I live in #NewMexico, I have a more personal reason to want to see the Arizona legislature flipped blue. I’d love for Arizona to join New Mexico as a hub of democracy and progressivism in the U.S. southwest. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to join in.

@heidilifeldman @lolgop I would love nothing more than having our legislature flip, so thanks for your support. Thank god Hobbs and Mayes won in 2022 or we would really be f**ked. I like living in Tucson but I was seriously considering a move to New Mexico if Lake and Hamadeh won.

@lolgop I'm poor as a church mouse, given my church wouldn't even hire me when I begged. That means I have friends like me. Multiple people are saying (quoting directly), "Democrats could end poverty with the donations they collect."

I know many small donations looks better on paper, but I'm going to ask everyone who asks for cash donations for a campaign to carefully target the ask. Those blanket asks are going to people who need actual blankets. This really, really isn't OK.

@janisf

I've been involved in politics in one way or another for a long time. I've never heard anyone ask people who do not have the spare change to make a financial contribution.

Taking care of your and your family's basic needs always comes first. Always.

@lolgop asked for one person. That absolutely should be interpreted as one person who can afford to contribute.

The same goes for "blanket" asks. No one should ever feel bad about not being able to chip in $ or volunteer if you can't.

@joeinwynnewood @lolgop

I'm not saying people feel bad. I'm saying they're getting angry about the incessant asks while they still have no money to give. Saying "no" is work.

It's not me. I'm not here to defend them. I'm here to flag the Democratic campaigns I know need their tenuous votes. Please pass the word on.

@janisf

I'm not quite sure how campaigns would know what everyone's financial status is if people don't tell them (by asking to be removed from their list).

I guess a "financially stability" flag could be added to the voter databases campaigns rely on, but even then, there's not one copy of one database that everyone works off of. There are dozens and dozens of copies across states...

@joeinwynnewood @lolgop I'm not sure what datasets are allowed, but you could look at neighborhood of residence, medicaid status and/or coverage info, or maybe use AI to look at SM feeeds to get an idea of who not to target. The legislators, though, should have an idea.

If you need an SQL person, don't hesitate to holler.

@janisf @lolgop

I'm pretty sure everyone below Congress is working off of vote builder which, so far as I know, is pretty bare bones, demographics + voting history. I believe that DB is supplied by the DNC via state Parties.

It's not cheap to get commercial data sets to marry with the basics.

I know consortiums of outside groups are using Catalist, with some commercial data, in battleground states, but they can't coordinate with candidates.

Bottom line, it costs $ and $ is scarce for most.

@joeinwynnewood @lolgop

Maybe what candidates need are connections not to money, but the people in the corporations who own the big data. Monetary donations might satisfy whatever need, but maybe going after what's needed directly might be more effective.

Granted, this is what the left faces. American conservatism is built of donors, thinking The Church should be the primary social services provider.

Rumor has it we know how to schmooze....

@janisf @lolgop

It's an awful lot of effort for the relatively small benefit of reducing annoyance for some segment of (maybe?) voters.

I would hope our voters can put up with the hassle to push forward the possibility of important beneficial policies.

Imagine being able to form or join a union without fear of losing your job?

I'll suffer a bit of hassle now for the real possibility of that future.

janisf,
@janisf@mstdn.social avatar

@joeinwynnewood @lolgop It's not a small segment--it's most voters. They're the taxpayers.

It's not a bit of hassle I'm talking about. If you want the entire government to shift, you're going to have to convince the taxpayers and as it stands, get their votes.

It's a political reality. Too many people's expectations have been set.

Best of luck to you, though. Don't forget to take care of yourself enough to stay healthy.
