Pay $49.95 to the nonprofit group which owns the Little Free Library trademark to make my almost-Little Free Library official, or not. Hmm... (apparently quite the charity moneymaker).

@ai6yr

What are they doing exactly to support little free libraries? Are they building them? Handing them out? Providing blueprints? Providing books?

If all they're doing is profiteering off the trademark, then don't.

ai6yr,

@shekinahcancook Promoting them and selling kits to build your own, or pre-assembled libraries. Yeah, tough call for me. They do have an online directory of those libraries, but it's not costing $3M a year to run that directory, I assure you.

@ai6yr

They SELL the kits, or give them away? If they're selling them, I'd lean toward a "no" on that one. They're already covering their costs. And by no means does a website and constant contact subscription, maybe some flyers, cost $3M a year. Sounds like profiteering to me.

ai6yr,

@shekinahcancook Sadly, I am getting the idea that many nonprofits are profiteering nowadays (or, how to pay executive salaries), with some exceptions. I mean, look at the huge abuse of the system with OpenAI.

ai6yr,

@shekinahcancook Pricey to buy one instead of build one, but I get it if you're not at all handy.

@ai6yr

My friends, I have been doing home improvements for 40 years now, and there's not a snowball's chance in hell it costs $300 to make one of those. I could do it with scraps I have right now in my garage.

ai6yr,

@shekinahcancook LOL, which is exactly what my library was (scavenged materials... except for the drip edge, I couldn't find any so bought a strip of it for $10)

@ai6yr

Exactly.

@ai6yr Obviously you need to start a creative-commons licensed LibreLibrary org, then! 😁

@ai6yr What do you get for that? What do they spend the money on? $50 seems like a lot if all you get is a number and being findable on their web site.

ai6yr,

@mjausson Number and being findable on their web site. (and a little plaque to make it "official")

@ai6yr That tiny little plaque isn't worth $50 in my opinion. I'd call it a "Small Free Library" and add it to Google Maps if I wanted it to be findable online.

ai6yr,

@mjausson it does look like they run some programs to connect people with free books to put in their libraries https://littlefreelibrary.org/stewards/book-directory/

ai6yr,

@mjausson LOL "Box With Books You Can Borrow In It (TM)"

ai6yr,

2022 Form 990 for the group that runs the Little Free Library thing. $3.2M in revenues in 2021, $1.2M in profit. $2.9M in 2022, $525K in profits. Reasonable executive expenses, just one full time executive director paid a reasonable salary.
