@fkamiah17 Thank you! I used to devour books when I was younger but I've been feeling guilty about how little I read for a few years, now.

I hope this kicks off the habit again!

@fkamiah17 I'm sure I will. I've followed you so I don't lose track of your recommendations x

@Wufflekins I don't actually do recommendations that much these days - I just happened to be tidying my bookshelves today 🥰
Thanks for the follow!

@fkamiah17 No worries - It's gonna take a while to get through the ones in your thread before I need any more recommendations! 😊

@fkamiah17 I did try and read The Great Gatsby a bit back because it was such a slim book but I kept getting around 30-40 pages in then realising I hadn't actually taken any of it in.

@Wufflekins I can't stand that book. I've never understood why people think it's a classic. "Money doesn't make you happy or get you what you want, says pisshead rich guy".
There you go, you don't need to finish it now 😂

Gatsby was basically forgotten about until WWII when the armed forces started distributing cheap paperback reprints to servicemen. They picked Gatsby as one of them. Nice short book, manly themes, I guess. It started a revival.

@negative12dollarbill @Wufflekins That's interesting, I didn't know that. Perhaps cementing the idea that being rich is an achievement in itself? Or that rich people are inherently right purely on the basis of their wealth.

Maybe people simply thought if the US Government was printing 150,000 copies it must be a Great Book somehow.

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@negative12dollarbill @Wufflekins That makes perfect sense.

suehewit,

@fkamiah17 I loved Treacle Walker. Thanks for your recommendations.
