'Use AI to rewrite COBOL as Java' sounds like it was designed to test the saying that 'no one got fired for buying IBM'.

(yes, this is really a service IBM is offering - a quick search will find lots of press releases etc)

@pwaring My bet would be that it's not actually using (much/any?) AI but mostly fixed rules and a pretty marketing name.

@penguin42 @pwaring sounds like you could do it with some pattern matching and a rules engine. An expert system is still an AI.

@falken @pwaring Yeh; but imagine that a decree had come down from the boss that said 'We must put effort into our trendy AI numbers in next years results' now you tack 'AI' onto your product for working on ancient software and move the profit to the trendy pot and get a pat on the back!

@penguin42 They also seem to have some middleware to allow COBOL to talk to Java, and it's limited to their Z mainframes so they can probably make a bunch of assumptions about the underlying hardware.
