@charadon @charadon done, but why if I may ask?

microblog.pub, the server software I was using, is a dead project from what it looks like, and since it's made in Python, I don't have any faith it'll survive the nearing Fedora upgrade.

I've not had great experiences with unmaintained python programs surviving python version upgrades. If it was made in something like Perl, I probably could've just stuck with it since those don't break with a minor release, but python software tends to break lol

@charadon @mjgardner more python unmaintainability horror stories

@ChristosArgyrop @mjgardner It's a good prototyping language, but there comes a point when you should probably pivot to something like once you start grabbing 50 pip modules and having to force users to have Python 3.9.4 specifically =P

@charadon @mjgardner Depends on the task I think. I use a mix of #perl , #clang , #sql and #rstats ,because there are tasks that are best done by different packages in different languages. I particularly like Perl as it allows for a rather straightforward transformation to C down the road

@ChristosArgyrop @mjgardner Honestly, a lot of times the reason I don't just use C for everything is that C is really awful at string manipulation and file handling (Once you have to go beyond the fopen-line of functions).

I'm actually hoping to eventually learn how to embed perl code into C so I can have the best of both worlds. Sure it'll make the program slower, but my sanity would be worth it lol

@charadon @mjgardner look at FFI. I am done with string manipulation in C, just look at the gazillion ways in the standard library to do it safely and avoid buffer overruns. Who has time for this ?
The combo of C and Perl is just unbeatable

@ChristosArgyrop I hesitate to recommend it but you sound like the target audience for Will-the-not-so-Chill’s #RPerl dialect compiler

@mjgardner @ChristosArgyrop Seems like a dead project unfortunately =(
