"SHANDYGAFF: a very refreshing drink, being a mixture of bitter ale or beer and ginger-beer, commonly drunk by the lower classes in England, and by strolling tinkers, low church parsons, newspaper men, journalists, and prizefighters."

@Axomamma @libationlegacy interesting the shandy - with ginger-beer. I always thought (from childhood exposure) it was a fanta/orange or sprite (citrus) [as in German radlers]

@SRDas I lived in Ibadan, Nigeria in the early '70s. At parties with my school chums, the popular drink was beer and ginger ale. I thought it sounded foul, so I never tried it. I had no idea it was a "real thing," as the kids say. I have to assume they got it from the British colonists.

@Axomamma Ah yes - ginger ale too (but not ginger beer). I too learnt about shandy in days as a kid in Abeokuta and later Lagos - late 70s, early 80s - from my Dad mostly who found (Star) beer too bitter 😅 (I'd get a sip or two to taste, then go for my own non alcoholic fanta with bitters - or bitter lemon with salt)

@SRDas I miss the food and people so much.

@Axomamma I'm thankful that access to ingredients has improved tremendously especially over the recent past few years. Amazingly, in Pittsburgh we even have a Nigerian restaurant (it's called African Eats - though). I do miss the Naija crowd from twitter (didn't know many irl - left there when I was very young)

@SRDas @Axomamma apologies for strangely popping up here 176 days late, but i was just searching Ibadan here because of the big explosion last week, came across your conversation, and just want to add: i really, really miss the Naija crowd too on Twitter, more and more 😓 (i used to live in and do research in Edo State but also stayed in Ibadan several times. I miss it all). One advantage of very little Nigeria news here: also learned in this search that Sade was born in Ibadan! Didn’t know that

@pvonhellermannn @Axomamma not strange - thanks for chiming in. I didn't know of the Ibadan news. Yes - not too much Naija or even Africa news or people I could find really.

The explosion was pretty bad. A friend of mine told me today that his family home is one of the houses completely destroyed; his father was luckily found and rescued. I did see the news briefly last week but when he told me felt bad that it hadn’t even fully registered, as it would have done on Twitter. Never mind! Will try and post more #Nigeria news myself
