"In 2024 [foo] will switch to #Wayland and remove #Xorg …"

Yeah, hmm ok, so how do I run that $25YearsOldApp I need?

And no, I won't go fix Xorg or Wayland, I already spent years cleaning up the X11 mess in Conky (for an hypothetical Haiku port I've yet to start) just so someone else can add Wayland support… I've done my share already.

@mmu_man @BrodieOnLinux You’ll be able to run it like before, with XWayland, which isn’t going anywhere.

It does raise the question of: do we need to support 25 year old apps for all time and refuse to fix our entire desktop stack to support them? Real question, btw, not trying to be snarky or anything.

@thelinuxEXP @BrodieOnLinux not sure Conky would work there, it draw on the root window… ?

@thelinuxEXP @BrodieOnLinux I just mean the state of Wayland support is greatly overestimated.

Not all 25yo apps are worth keeping, but there are likely many that are still of use for some.

@thelinuxEXP @BrodieOnLinux and I'm not even talking about all the Qt apps that we had to clean up X11 code off to port them to Haiku… But then we're touching the "platform problem" there.

@mmu_man @thelinuxEXP @BrodieOnLinux And as far I could tell those are for the most part running just fine in XWayland, because X11 is still there, the difference is just the X server implementation.
(And when they don't directly hard-depend on X11, they can work in Wayland proper)

@mmu_man @BrodieOnLinux I don’t think it’s overstated, I’ve used Wayland on GNOME and KDE for the better part of 2 years now, and I’ve yet to come across a si glue app that doesn’t work.
My use case isn’t enveryone’s, but I do use a lot of stuff.

@mmu_man @thelinuxEXP @BrodieOnLinux Drawing on the root "window" could be problematic but isn't there a conky mode where it's a regular window? (Which for me ought to be fine as a transition, as you can't expect absolutely everything to work, specially hacks)

@mmu_man @thelinuxEXP @BrodieOnLinux "Conky is a free, light-weight system monitor for X, that displays any kind of information on your desktop. It can also run on Wayland, macOS, output to your console, a file, or even HTTP (oh my!)." from https://github.com/brndnmtthws/conky

@ciourte @thelinuxEXP @BrodieOnLinux yes, because it got ported to it, after I cleaned up the X11 code that was everywhere without any abstraction layer. (did you read my first post?)
