There are about 7M Palestinians living in Israel, Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. Estimates are that about 6-10M live in the Diaspora, although many are in camps in neighbouring countries.
You'd think more people on here would know one or two, but then again, Palestinians don't always introduce themselves as such. It's an identity that comes with a lot of baggage.
@evan would you? (think that, that is) – the numbers aren’t that big really
Personally I’m qualified no – I’ve been to Jerusalem and I’ve interacted with Palestinian shopkeepers and such, but I don’t believe I know any Palestinians otherwise (though it’s certainly possible)
@evan I will take this moment to share that I used to do yoga with Angela Davis, a big Palestinian activist. One day a young woman spotted her Palestine necklace, asked if she’d been there and she graciously said yes, it was one of her favorite places.
@evan I'm working with a Palestinian software company for a Saudi healthcare project. A Saudi business analyst I work with closely did her studies in Palestine but said it was too cold 😂
@evan I ‘knew’ one during our college days - a certain Yousuf. Kind of your ‘Hi/Bye, how’s it going?’ type of friend. He was a student in AIIMS (India’s premier medical institute). I recall he would (jokingly) taunt us about Pervez Musharraf, “All of India is afraid of PerEvez Musharraf.” (read that in an Arabic accent).
There’s also ahmad[at]bassam.social - a sys admin living in Jerusalem who runs his own instance. Has helped me many times when I’ve been stuck with problems related to my server.
@evan@timbray what’s the diff between strong vs qualified? I’d say I know both probably, considering how they look at their Palestinian-ness from their American POV. Also more than a few of these humans who can identify as such it might count as both. 🤷🏼♂️
@adron@timbray in general, I try not to enumerate all the ways that you can "sort of" say yes, because no matter how many I list, there's going to be someone who "sort of" would say yes, but since it's not exactly on the list, they say no.
