So Zelda is becoming a movie, huh? I hope they don't focus too much of Link's character arc! In the best Zeldas, link is just the happiest when exploring, kicking monster butt, wearing stunning outfits, smashing pots and occasionally helping people.

In my headcanon, he's in his element when doing it and loves every second. So if the story focuses on struggle and personal growth, it should focus on other characters for that aspect.

@Nifflas They ruined Mario already. And they ruined Zelda with Twilight Princess. Expect the worst. This movie is for the lowest common denominator.

@Nifflas I want the movie to be... basically about anything BUT Link. He's never really the protagonist in any of the games. Hell, in BotW (and TotK) in particular, Zelda is the actual protagonist in my opinion. I guess we'll see. I'm cautiously optimistic because I genuinely enjoyed the Mario movie.

@Nifflas This will be a coming-of-age movie about how Ganondorf grew up and became the villain we know taking over Hyrule. Or a hiking documentary about Hyrule and its people. Or just Zelda waiting for Link during a 4 hours length movie.

Nifflas,
@Nifflas@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@voxographe Haha! I'd totally be up for Link being the main character! But I feel it'd have to be approached experimentally. Telling a story where the emotional core is the other characters, but through his eyes. Then preserve the simplicity of Link: he just lives for going on adventures.

Kinda like Zelda games in other words!

@Nifflas Agreed. But... what about a multiverse blockbuster movie then? All Links team up! All the villains are there too! CGI all over the place in a spectacular and boring adventure full of references.

(Yes, I'm trying to imagine how much they can wreck the franchise in a single movie.)

Nifflas,
@Nifflas@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@voxographe Haha, I'm trying to make the idea even worse but I can't!

    @BaldSavant Yeah, that's what really worries me! I really hope the filmmakers will understand this, but my hopes aren't that high!

    @BaldSavant Yeah, absolutely!

    powermad,

    @Nifflas Agreed. Playing a Mad Max or a Samurai Jack role seems appropriate. Like I don't mind even if they let him talk, just as long as they understand he's a pretty set simple character and the world around him is where you should maybe get your focus.

    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @Nifflas we genuinely don't even know how they can really do it

    like... the core spirit of the Zelda series is that it's the things you imagine doing as a kid when you play in the woods with a stick.

    movies don't inherently need dialogue but anything big-budget does, because studios can't afford to take a risk on experimental stuff. but the more they say in words, the less it leaves to the imagination.

    irenes,
    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @Nifflas they will never, ever, ever do it but we wish they would just make Zelda the protagonist of the movie. let it be her arc - there's plenty of material there.

    Nifflas,
    @Nifflas@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @irenes Oh yeah, that could definitely work too!

    My main worry is they'll turn Link into a too developed character, and it'll completely break the spirit of what Link represents.

    irenes,
    @irenes@mastodon.social avatar

    @Nifflas very much agreed. we're sure they're at least thinking about that angle, but that doesn't mean they'll get it right...

    Nifflas,
    @Nifflas@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @irenes I completely agree! This would work best as an experimental movie that takes risks and leans into what the best Zeldas are about.

    What an amazing surprise it'd be if they actually pull it off. Unfortunately, I don't really dare to hope for it. It's too wild. X)

    @Nifflas for sure!!!!
