Sometimes I go to Market Basket (regional US grocery store) and they have none of some standard produce item. I think that's just how Market Basket rolls. I went yesterday and they were out of bananas. No organic, no conventional, no mini: no bananas. Other times it's been green peppers, zucchini, broccoli, and probably several other things I've long forgotten about

That said, there are reports of a looming global banana shortage, so could be the local beginnings of that:

Maybe more people will vote to end fossil fuel subsidies, pass a carbon tax, tax vehicle weight, etc., if they can't get their accustomed foods anymore?
But wait, there's more! Those crops are grown in the SW desert facing a water crisis while Iowa, the best farm land in the US, grows corn to make ethanol. Makes sense.
But wait, there's more. Ethanol fuel is terrible for most small engines!
