Magnetic chargers are the future

Apparently, Apple plans to make a port-less iPhone which only uses wireless charging.

This is something I predicted 7 years ago!

Qi - the wireless charging standard - is excellent. Put your phone down on a mat, or in a cradle, and it starts charging. Lovely! But there's a problem. You can't pick up your phone while it's charging. How many times have you lain on

@Edent Apple’s MagSafe charging puck would work fine for that couch use case.

@Edent wireless charging is so wasteful (30% lost to transfer, compared to wire i think?), if everything switches to it it might have a sizeable impact on energy use, not really what we need now :(

Edit: oh, why is that post from 2021 making the rounds now? 😅

frainfostudent,

@Edent I’m more concerned about being further locked into apple’s ecosystem (or any manuf for that matter) and data access. Okay, neat, I now have an IP66 phone. How do i get my photos into Lightroom? Or if I’m inclined to take spicy photos i don’t want to share with Apple, Google, M$, etc., how do i get those off of my phone without using online storage if I’m not the technical type to run my own Nextcloud instance?

@Edent I hear worries of electrical shorts on the magnetic connectors due to improper protection.

... my experiment went for a few months until I crushed the cable past usefulness

@sudrien How on earth did you crush a cable? Would a regular USB have survived that level of stress?

@Edent it was the oblong magnetic connector type (digital ant as marketed), not the round one pictured - so would presume it was higher required tolerances of orientation.

And ... crushing micro usb connectors, and cable ends, yes. Thankfully type c has improved the record, but there still so many cables that can't negotiate over 0.5A charging. Though I have to wonder now it that's not a result of surviving my clumsiness at all.
