does anyone know if it is possible to boost a post to followers only? Sometimes I see things on the federated timeline that I want to boost to followers but not to the instance local timeline.

That would be a good feature. I know they are implementing quotations, so that might be a way to do it, but until then, it's not a thing that can be done.
