I am a cactus, quite mean
My spines are as sharp as they seem
I'll poke our your eye
Put a hole in your thigh
I'm a hiker's bad dream

@ai6yr
Listen up bro I got some spikes
I know what happens on those hikes
My pad is what every creature likes
Survive with pliers—tell your tykes!

@USelaine They are tasty (once spines are removed). Well, I like them, my family does not.

When a fool touches me he’ll shout owwww
Or if it’s a cat a plaintive meowwww
When you see me just look don’t touch
For your soft hands I’m just too much

@stevewfolds That's a pretty (and less lethal) one!

@ai6yr The dragonfruit are cactus, but with small spines .. small enough that I say no I don't need gloves. Then I say "ouch" .. or "Ouch" .. or "Ouch!"

But it's funny. The pain is almost instantaneous, and then gone, and there are no lasting effects, and so .. no I don't need gloves.

@John Nice looking flower! I have been getting flowers, but the fruit has not taken this year (crossing fingers on the latest).

@ai6yr oh! Good luck

@ai6yr I lived at one place where these were grown on the inside side of a fence so that anyone who tried to hop over would get a nasty surprise

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@andybrwn Carissa macrocarpa is a good one for that too... used as a burglar deterrent in South Africa, but also tasty. https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/carissa-macrocarpa/

@ai6yr I grew up with one of those somewhere in the yard!

ncweaver,

@ai6yr
Eh, that is a whatever cactus...

It isn't like a teddy-bear cholla

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@ncweaver ah yes, nature's killer velcro.

Owch. IIRC from my days in the Boy Scouts and a desert ecology summer school class, the best tool to remove them is a good stiff black comb.

@ai6yr when I was a kid in ABQ we called these cheap burglar alarms (grow them under the window)

geographile,

@ai6yr my child carries a grudge against prickly pear because about 8 years ago he threw his favorite beach ball, and the wind caught it and spun it into a prickly pear, which popped it.
