Happy 70th birthday to one of my top five favorite #bookstores on the planet, City Lights Books! The Poetry Room is sacred space, #Beat browser Heaven. https://www.7x7.com/city-lights-books-70th-anniversary-2664867179.html

@stevesilberman

RIP Lawrence Ferlinghetti.

He said he loved this picture snapped on his bookstore's wall on Jack Kerouac Alley.

📷 "Our Labor is the Foundation of Their Fortune" the full graffiti read. 1990.

lowreso,

@stevesilberman now you made me incredibly curious about the other four…

@lowreso Shakespeare and Company in Paris, The Strand in NYC, Tim's Used Books in Provincetown, and a changing fifth.

mambearpnw,

@stevesilberman My kid was just there with his mate. They weren't comfortable with the store's atmosphere, made them uncomfortable. They left and went to Barnes & Noble instead.
My kid's a Marine, and so his is lady friend. Something to think about, yeah?

@mambearpnw "Uncomfortable with the store's atmosphere"? Too many black and brown faces on the books or something? I honestly can't even imagine the type of person who would be uncomfortable in that store. Good luck.

mambearpnw,

@stevesilberman Agreed. I wonder as well given they enjoy their bookstores together. What set that one apart from the others...I'll venture there one day and check it out myself.

@mambearpnw Glad to hear it's not a race thing, but to be honest, as it's one of the most special places in the world to me, I utterly don't care that a couple of Marines felt "uncomfortable." They're Marines for Christ's sakes; if a bookstore makes them uncomfortable we're all fucked.

mambearpnw,

@stevesilberman That's certainly one perspective.
To me it looks like an incredible shop to get lost in.

@mambearpnw Or found! I used to go there with Allen Ginsberg to pick up his mail.

mambearpnw,

@stevesilberman A bookshop to get found in?! That's kinda beautiful right there, sincerely.

Thanks for sharing and being civil.

There's a little corner shop in NYC I bought my first Sedaris book - Me Talk Pretty One Day. I'll never forget it. Tight little aisles, over my head to toe of shelves of books. It's one of my favourite experiences. Was lost then found in that shop and to this day Sedaris is one of my favourites and every piece of his is in my home collection.

What'd you find?

@stevesilberman we just drove by there last week! I would have stopped in but—— parking.

@stevesilberman I was just thinking about hanging out in that room reading poetry a few years ago... there's a small window looking out the back over the clotheslines of Chinatown.
