“Starting this fall, an upcoming developer beta release of visionOS will include the App Store”

visionOS seems to be mostly on the iOS 17 cycle, even if the hardware is still months away (probably not as many as you think). That means the App Store is opening up soon™.

I will be opting all my apps out of the visionOS App Store until I've had enough time with a physical unit to ship a native version. I do not intend to have the iOS versions available, even in beta

Incidentally, that checkbox is now available on App Store Connect, so if you've been waiting to opt-out of visionOS support, now's the time

danielton,

@stroughtonsmith That checkbox has kept a lot of useful apps from reaching the Mac, and I assume it will have the same effect on visionOS.

@stroughtonsmith What I find interesting is how close iPad apps already are to “optimized for visionOS” except for a few issues, like windows not being resizable and some “hover” (focus?) states not being sufficiently distinguishable. These issues are so minor and fixable (iPad windows can and do support resizing!) that they feel intentional… like if the iPad apps were 10% more optimized, they worry none of us would bother with visionOS support.

There’s no direct financial benefit for Apple to encourage developers to write visionOS-native apps; on the contrary, it costs Apple more to make those docs, videos, roadshows, etc.

But yes, I think they deliberately make these things “barely good enough” because they don’t really love them. Rightfully so.
