Hey, does anybody know things about ergonomic mice? My hands are very small and I have a bunch of RSIs and bad joints (my elbow and the nerves within are the worst, but my shoulder is bad also and my clicker finger needs a splint sometimes), and I'm once again idly thinking about getting an #Ergonomic mouse. Do they actually help?
Is it feasible to just have two mice plugged in and use whichever one feels best at the moment, or will that just result in a new and exciting stress injury?

@sinituulia I use the nipple in the centre of my laptop keyboard. (Trackpad is disabled). It means I don't have to move my hands away from the home row of the keyboard. Dunno if that would work for your needs.

@quixoticgeek I'm on PC and new not-cheap mechanical keyboard that I quite like!

@sinituulia I have a ThinkPad as my laptop's. But also a standalone ThinkPad usb keyboard with nipple in the middle.

I do get the impression I'm the only person on the planet still using the nipple...

@sinituulia I used a vertical mouse for some time.
After I discovered that I'm even worse at aiming during gaming I had a regular and the vertical mouse connected and used one for work and the other for games.

When I had to replace my gaming mouse due to non responsive buttons I decided to go back to a single, regular mouse...

@dec_hl I have an ancient gaming mouse that seems content to just keep on going, and I really like the extra sensitivity even though it took a bit to get used to it years ago. No idea if this would prove to be an issue with a standard but vertical mouse!

@sinituulia My ergonomic mouse is called touchpad. First I was 'Ok for browsing but how do I CAD?', then 'But how do I Inkscape?', 'But how do I edit videos?', and it's all fine in the end. The only question left 'How do I Minecraft?'. My relaxing flower planting game Cloud Gardens I still play with touchpad only.

@Triffen 😄
I would probably have a cat on top of it at all times. Or two, they usually wedge themselves between the keyboard and me.
It's been a while since I used a laptop with one, but I do have a touch/gesture activated drawing tablet, and using that seemed to anger my elbow, and it responds to cat paws as well as human hands... (I love the cats, but they are kind of in the way sometimes!)

@sinituulia They became better over the years, at least my current is really good. I got addicted to tap and double tap instead of clicking and my poor index finger doesn't suffer from clicking and scrolling. Also software that still uses middle click, or, worse, middle drag, isn't offensive anymore.
But my problems are all in the fingers and in the wrist (and then the veins there too), elbows are fine.
I do have to hold the laptop on my kneed mostly, angled so the hands are a bit down.

sinituulia,
@sinituulia@eldritch.cafe avatar

@Triffen Touch taps are much lighter on the hands, but my elbow will eventually get upset when I use my tablet - and almost immediately when I use my phone. Middle click is kind of horrible on any mouse and drag-clicking also.
My fingers are a little bit finicky, and my wrist that has gotten sprained and slightly fractured in the past sometimes gets upset... But mostly it's the elbow. On both arms, if I switch to using my left hand for everything! I never got imaging of my arms, but my knees and hips got an MRI at one point and have been medically declared Utterly Fucked Up, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was something wrong with my elbows as well

Triffen,
@Triffen@floss.social avatar

@sinituulia Yeah, before I switched to touchpad I would do most things with my left hand but not the precise stuff, and the left fingers have started to suffer too.
Keeping forearms angled down really helps me but that's individual of course.
Otherwise I have looked at those big ball mice and some people would love them and for others they are worse, and they are like $100 and more, so I'm not inclined trying them one after another.
I'd like a streamdeck as some shortcuts are painful to perform.

@sinituulia OMG yes!!! I got the vertical MX a couple months ago and it is so much better. I got the previous, somewhat better MX mouse last year, but the vertical, so your forearm isnt twisted, is fantastic. I think you can have more than one mouse, b/c sometimes I go between the track pad on my laptop and the vertical mouse. (I have it all usually hooked u to a monitor, too.) Also got the ergnomic/swoopy keyboard, which takes a minute to get used to, but I love it. Much easer on the wrists.

@susiemagoo thoughtful nodding
I just recently got another gaming mechanical keyboard, I prefer the way the key presses take up very little actual pressure and am used to it anyway. But my mouse could definitely do with a companion if it was any better. Using the mouse definitely wrecks my elbow more than typing on the keyboard

@sinituulia @susiemagoo +1 on the MX vertical. I have one both at work and at home for several years now, and it makes days when I mouse around a lot a bunch more comfortable. I tried a few cheap ones first, but the MX vertical is the first one that doesn't fall apart after a while.

sinituulia,
@sinituulia@eldritch.cafe avatar

@jaseg @susiemagoo It isn't the cheapest mouse possible, but I might give it a try if there's one small enough!
I could probably try it out in a store somewhere if everybody around me was willing to stop being disease vectors for a bit. 😂 I'm not above ordering one without testing it, first, though!

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@sinituulia @susiemagoo I'd say it's rather large, though "girthy" might be more fitting. I tried to look up the dimensions just now and I learned that apparently Logitech now has another vertical mouse that they specifically market for people with smaller hands. Maybe that'd be a better fit?

@susiemagoo @jaseg Ooh that one isn't even that expensive. And my magpie brain lit up when I saw it also comes in PINK, even though I'd probably get the black one anyway

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@sinituulia @susiemagoo lol, they make a white one. I've worked in first level support for a while and there I have come to the conclusion that white is The Wrong Color for computer peripherals that you touch with your hands. It just inevitably turns gross, and the rubbery stuff that they make these mice from doesn't appreciate being cleaned with solvents.

susiemagoo,
@susiemagoo@mstdn.social avatar

@jaseg @sinituulia you are so right. Still was tempted b
y pink! There might have been a gold one at some point, too. Magpie over here.

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@susiemagoo @sinituulia I think pink wouldn't get too gross, It'd be fine ^^
