Obama was the best president of my lifetime, but a lot of Democrats don’t seem to know that.

The influence of GOP media has a long reach. In subtle ways, such as language and framing, it seeps into everything from the New York Times to liberal social media. It seems to have convinced a number on the left that Obama was evil.

Even with hindsight, most white people seem to be in denial of the ferocity of the backlash against a black man being elected president in a glaringly racist country. Republicans scorched the earth around him. Democrats in Congress worked against him to score political points with their districts.

If you’ve ever wondered how we wound up with a Trump presidency, the story starts with Obama’s election, and ends with the nomination of Hillary Clinton.

(Okay, the story really starts with the North vs. the South in the 1700s, but most people aren’t willing to go back that far.)

Why was Hillary an issue? Mostly because she’d been unfairly but successfully demonized by GOP media for 30 years, to the point of significant national unpopularity. A generation of the voters in 2016 had grown up with their dad’s talk radio calling her the devil in the background. Like I said: long reach.
