The argument that the #rich would just up sticks & leave the UK if they were taxed more heavily, would seem to be built on sand....

Sure, they might say they'll leave when talking to their mates in #politics, but when push came to shove they might actually just pay up....

If true, this should reshape our views of what is possible around #wealth taxes!

Selena,

@ChrisMayLA6
Poor person: 'working here is just not worth it, my best option is to just go on the dole'
Media: you antisocial asshole, you need to be whipped back into compliance

Rich person: 'working here is just not worth it, my best option is to just leave'
Media: please no, tell us how we can convince you to stay, pleeeeaaaaase, pleeeeeaaaaaaaaaaase

@ChrisMayLA6 in that article, arguing for a 1.7% tax is absurdly unambitious.

Here’s a better ambition https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/jan/21/how-much-personal-wealth-is-enough-ingrid-robeyns-limitarianism

@ChrisMayLA6 We had a high marginal tax band in the sixties under Harold Wilson’s government and, though there was grumbling, there wasn’t a mass exodus. Britain hadn’t gone crackers over facilitating the non-dom class back then either so, to begin with, London wasn’t packed out with the obscene rich.
