Tails it is.

I really like this photograph of a female northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis). You see her here perched on one of my fence posts. I don't know why her tail is raised like that but it helps make the photo interesting. Perhaps that is a prelude to taking off and flying away.

I don't see nearly enough of female cardinals. The bright red males are favored--and, yes, they are vivid and easy to spot. But the more subtle ladies (still easy to identify by the red-orange crest) deserve attention.
