I was struggling with writing songs with vocals, so I went and grabbed Alter/Ego so I could use some synth voices to rough things out.

So far that has helped a ton. Since I have very little time when I'm alone and can just be loud, I can work on laying out the rough vocals silently on headphones.

Only problem is I find it pretty unstable. It crashes rather frequently.

Most of the time Alter/Ego's pronunciation of words is completely mangled and it makes my songs sound like K.K. Slider, The Depressed Years.

I want to hear a K.K. Slider cover of Alice Cooper's Pick Up the Bones

@Gwendolyn What software you use? I use audacity as it gives me an 8 bit sound.

Gwendolyn,

@lwflouisa My DAW is FL Studio 11, and as far as instruments go I keep things simple. Sytrus for most synths, Guitar Rig for my distortion and crap, and then I piece things together from there.

I'm running a super crappy laptop so I favor lightweight vsts.

@Gwendolyn Im running into this issue where I have to electronically generate some tones, as they dont exist in 12 equal temperament.

Gwendolyn,

@lwflouisa So, tones outside of the standard A-G scale? If you're looking for options, Sytrus lets you specify the exact frequency of the tone you're generating. I'm not sure if Sytrus works outside of FL Studio though.

@Gwendolyn Yea specifically:

Xenharmonic equivalents to Bb-B-Eb-F-Fsharp.

The fantasy culture Im working with uses Quarter Tones.

megacurve,

@Gwendolyn Crashes a lot doesn't sound good at all! Is it free? Just see the download page and isn't in the store to buy

bazkie,

@Gwendolyn what a great concept! shame it's unstable.. maybe there are more vsts like this?

Gwendolyn,
@Gwendolyn@eldritch.cafe avatar

@bazkie Yeah, there's others that look and sound better, but Alter/Ego works for what I needed. No AI, fully offline, resource light (for crappy laptop), and most of all... free.

I am quickly liking this method. And after I'm done a part in my sequencer, I now have the MIDI track for the pitch correcting.

bazkie,

@Gwendolyn nice! I'm definitely going to give it a try, sounds like fun! (I have a mic but never really dare singing in my tracks lol.. maybe trying it out with a vst first might push me a bit)
