IG/Meta has been inserting the word "terrorist" into the bios of users that included the words Palestinian" and “alhamdulillah” (which means praise to Allah, or God) https://www.404media.co/instagram-palestinian-arabic-bio-translation/

@taylorlorenz Lost in machine translation

kentoseth,

@taylorlorenz

I wouldn't want to ascribe maliciousness where incompetence could be the more likely outcome but this would only translate like this under 2 conditions:

  • a constantly learning/re-learning translation model
  • editorially

The former seems unusual because most words don't change in translation based on current events ... unless Meta is of the opinion that what words mean is based on their users opinions.

I also tested this phrase on a few LLMs & none of them translated to that.

zenheathen,

@taylorlorenz Holy. Shit.

hula,

@taylorlorenz Is Meta ever sincere? I thought their main business model was based on exploring exactly how deep the well of insincerity is.

@taylorlorenz While we can roll our eyes on such translation errors, it was probably done by a neural net. As a model of how one works, imagine a one-year old child that can speak and that knows what words tend to follow other words, but that has no idea as to what anything means. Plus the child was trained on Twitter.

santiago,
thadguidry,

@taylorlorenz unfollowed - unethical post writing that missed key words of “translation”, “AI”, etc. I suspect your reasons were to help drive traffic for ads. I follow sincere journalism only. Happy to discuss further.

spiritedpause,

@taylorlorenz Christian Arabs say “alhamdulillah” too, so maybe Meta is playing inclusive 4D chess and saying that anyone can be a terrorist regardless of religion 😛

aurochs,
@aurochs@todon.eu avatar

@taylorlorenz In all fairness, all religions have a fair amount of terrorism, so I don't find it very wrong per se.
I do find it biased.

@taylorlorenz If only there was a button to delete #Terrorism on Earth.

Tired of:

#ISIS
#Hamas
#Taliban
#AlQaeda
#IslamicJihad &
#Hezbollah; wherever #Islam is hijacked by #Terrorists & UNPRODUCTIVE malicious groups that now have gullible minds directly or indirectly DEFENDING #Antisemitism, #Racism, Westernophobia & the same ppl who celebrated 9/11 & recent massacre(s).

📌People are losing their minds over #Israel #Gaza #Palestine #News & #Disinformation.

kingwill101,

@taylorlorenz how did that even happen?

@kingwill101 @taylorlorenz some kind of ai translation issue, probably. highly doubt this was purposeful. it is an interesting case study on implicit via in ai training, though.

LiamEgan,

@taylorlorenz You don’t ‘accidentally’ insert the word “terrorist”. This is totally by design.

Social Media have been doing what politicians have been doing for decades.

  1. Do something evil or bad.
  2. If Caught, apologize, if caught doing something worse than the usual - “Sincerely” apologize.
  3. See that there is no downside to this cycle, so think of something to ‘up’ your game the next time.

Same old story, do bad, apologize, wait for the cooldown period then repeat.

nanoelquant,

@taylorlorenz it hasn't been. The article states that they provided this word wrongfully in the automatic translation. Your post is misleading.

@taylorlorenz WTAF? That code didn’t write itself.

Judith_IP,

@taylorlorenz More accurate statement is that the translation of the Palestinian flag plus an Arabic language phrase (Alhamdulillah is an Arabic phrase meaning "praise be to God") incorrectly added the word terrorist. They didn't "insert" a word into bios of users. They incorrectly translated.

ToddWalker,

@taylorlorenz “auto-translation” isn’t some magic spell.

Someone(s) at Facebook (Meta 🙄) did this on purpose.
