• at the beginning of a pack, you turned over the cigarette you wanted to smoke last.
• If you offered cigarettes to others in the group (which was a social obligation), this cigarette was taboo for the others. (1/2)

This ensured that you had at least one cigarette to yourself at the end of a pack when you smoked together. If none was rolled over, it was a sign that you had already another pack in your pocket and others were free to take the last cigarette from the pack. (2/2)

I also remember that when opening a new pack, the other person would flip the cigarette over for you, as a gesture of caring for you and saying thanks for being offered a cigarette. Also as leaving sign to others: this person has already shared with others, it's a social person, be nice to them.
