A question: Has anyone done a survey on the cost of running a #Mastodon instance - both in terms of expenditures for running and maintaining the software on a server, and the time the admins have to spend on running and administering it?
And how does this scale depending on the number of users? #FediHelp
Costs depend on whether you're hosting on physical servers or virtual machines, system specs (CPU, memory, storage) and perhaps traffic.

Admin time is difficult to estimate, depends on the amount of outages, available server capacity & whether there were major/minor Mastodon releases.
@juergen_hubert A researcher contacted all listed instance admins around a year ago to gather metrics. The cost wasn't part of what they asked, though.
