The first time this happened to me, I showed up to a formal event wearing sandals, a t-shirt proclaiming the greatness of Linux, and jeans. Despite my casual attire, I was allowed entry by the security team, who recognized me as being from the IT department and assumed I was there to ensure the computers were functioning properly. LOL. (1/2)
Nobody said anything, but you know they were looking at me and like, WTF this guy is doing here? Is he lost? Who allowed him to join our elite event? Maybe it was all in my head because they were too busy with whatever they were doing that day. I still dislike attending social gatherings even now. I find solace in peaceful environments like the seaside or a park. Large crowds make me anxious and uncomfortable. It's just not my cup of tea. (2/2)
@nixCraft fellow here. i too find solace in peaceful environments like the seaside or park. of course, i will attend the social gatherings but again i find solace in peaceful environments
@nixCraft you have many kindred spirits! The trick is to not mind being different and indeed embrace it. Doesn’t make others bad or wrong. Plenty of room in the world for us all! That being said, give me a empty hiking trail or a train museum any day.
I owned that look for the night. In my head I pretended to be the richest asshole there. It gave me a ton of confidence even after the party was over and I learned that everyone there was faking it(or at least believed their own bullshit).
@nixCraft you know who else shows up at black tie events in jeans and comfortable shoes? The wealthiest people in the room. Eccentric tech billionaire vibe.
@nixCraft I remember being in a meeting at Intel one day in the 1980's with my CEO and a few of their execs to work out a deal for a project I was heading. I was the only one in the room without a coat and tie. But whenever a technical question came up, they would all look at me rather than my CEO. I came away realizing that my non-management attire gave me a certain credibility.
@nixCraft At my previous job, we were chronically short on meeting rooms. One day we booked the only one that was free. When we were there, the owner of the company entered, looked around disgustedly and said, "hmm, technicians [sic]" and left.
5 minutes later she came back "This meeting room is reserved for the management board, if I see any of you technicians here again it'll have consequences".
It wasn't even marked as a somehow special room in Outlook 🤷♂️
@devxvda@hszakher@nixCraft ok those are great but newer ones they tried to lock out third party toner with drm.... ugh.
at least the last one i dealt with, there was a debug menu you could enable to turn off the drm checking but IDK if it's there in latest firmware versions
@nixCraft Ha, happened to me aswell on a real hot summer day, similar outfit, wearing flipflops short cargo pants and a nerd shirt, no idea which one of the many I have... :D
Reason was I did expect the meeting on a different day.
The ppl just said that they envy me when we talked business, because they are sweating in their business suits. :D
There was no ignorance or something, just honesty. Thanks to that it was a good business meeting.
