@Tim_Eagon TIL that the snail-phones in The One Piece (Manga and Netflix series) were inspired by the not-unrelated "Pasilalinic-sympathetic Compass," a real thing that a real person invented and which repeatedly did not work. 🤯
@cstross@Tim_Eagon@FredKiesche I originally read it as "Tempest Procrastinator", and I wonder if Pratchett might have coined such a device to allow wizards to put off storms they didn't want to deal with right now...
@edchivers@Tim_Eagon@FredKiesche I'm just now visualizing the self-propelled version installed in the rectum of a hippopotamus, using mating Placobdelloides jaegerskioeldi. (If there's a storm coming the hippo gets angry, points into the direction the storm is coming from, and spins its tail as it projectile-shits.)
@cstross@Tim_Eagon@FredKiesche I had not heard of that species before. The things you learn on the internet... every day is a horrible, horrible school day!
@talia_christine How about that he built it in a circular configuration so that the leeches could see some of the other leeches and not feel lonely? Do leeches even have eyes?
