In addition to blooming profusely my indoor African violet plant has sprouted a green fuzzy something in the middle of one of the blossoms. . . Does anyone know what it is? Or if I should do anything about it other than see what happens next? Thanks.
@sallymack@houseplants It's a seed pod! In theory you can let it dry and harvest the seeds and plant them and get a new variety. (I have never tried that because I am really good at ending up with way too many African violets just from leaf propagation)
@lemay@houseplants Thanks! Am I supposed to cut off the seed pod? Leave it? I'm not interested in planting seeds but how would planting them result in a new variety? Wouldn't they be the same variety as the plant which produced the seeds? I may be missing something.
@sallymack@houseplants You can leave the seed pod alone, it's not doing any harm. Just remove the flower when it dies like you normally would.
If you have more than one kind of african violet they can cross-pollinate, so if you grew out the seeds the new plant will be a combination of the parents. If you just have the one I don't know if the seeds will even be viable but you’d (in theory) get a new plant of the same kind. (leaf propagation is easer)
@lemay@houseplants Thanks, again. I have one African violet plant, have had it for years (20?). It's never bloomed so profusely or produced a seed pod.
