I don’t get the philosophy of “good games make you want to explore instead of skipping it.”
No. If the game was 3 hours? Sure. I’ll walk every inch multiple times. But if you’re making me play 40+ hours and expecting me to travel 10 minutes to get to a checkpoint, you’re out of your mind. Even the most talented devs cannot sustain enough interesting or unique/fresh features in a game that long.
Or playing video games for that matter. Not to shit on gaming too hard, I’m playing og fallout rn, but my god what the fuck does Elon have to be escaping from? Go do literally anything with your money or give it to me. Rich people are terrible at spending money frfr
Dwarf Fortress devs themselves effectively defied capitalism and the game was simply donationware for the first 20 years of game development. Always respect when devs are able to do that and commit to it.
The official graphical versions now actually cost money on Steam, but they still release the underlying game for free (and plenty of free graphic mods out there if ASCII isn’t modern-graphics enough for you).
