LeftistLawyer,

My 6-yr old asked one of the BIG questions the other day.

"Daddy, why do we live?"

Knowing that he's being influenced by the ubiquitous botherers, I responded:

"Because of , little buddy. Kind of like the lightbulbs in our house, we all have a in us that runs through our and . When that spark goes out, we die."

He thought a bit about that, and then came the next BIG question:

"What happens when we "?

I carried the analogy further and told him:

"We become a part of the electricity that runs through the entire that let's everything live. Which is super important, because without that electricity, nothing would live."

Long pause ... "And, is that , Daddy"?

I replied: "Well, nobody knows for sure, but a lot of really people think it is."

SocialistStan,

@LeftistLawyer Religion is a destructive tool for social control, it's harmful to both the society and the people practicing it because it indoctrinates them from a young age into myths and magical thinking. Just look at FL or TX.

I don't see how more religion would be a good thing.

  • SocialistStan,

@LeftistLawyer That's not what I'm talking about, there's no mythology going on there.

An eco-faith has existed before, for example sun worship, which then of course led to a sun priesthood, etc.

@LeftistLawyer Why do they need it? I'd be more comfortable with removing the need and freeing everyone up to be irreligious. I don't think we need a literal faith built on bad ideas. Seeing through the propaganda, seeing what the real effects of overconsumption should be enough.

@LeftistLawyer I think it's nurture and social conditioning largely, and I'm happy with Marx's opiate of the masses' explanation of religion. When conditions improve, the need for such an elaborate shiny coping mechanism vanishes.

Atheism increases with standards of living.

I don't think it's just that we oversimplify and use heuristics, it's more simple to say "I don't know".
