@joel Wouldn't you use the shape builder? I would have to play with it honestly... which I'm trying not to at the moment so I can finish what I started 😏.
Not to say I am beyond his tutorials, his channel is amazing and I do watch it often, it's just that I don't think this is specifically covered in any of his tutorials
@joel LOL. I'm not saying you're a noob, but there are good tutorials on how to do many things. Maybe something helps you. Although yes, it may not have anything you need. You could still ask him. 🤔
@joel then draw the two circles, convert to paths, then just a regular rectangle, convert that to a path and tangent snap its four corners onto the circles and you get - why yes I am incredibly ADHD how did you guess?
@joel ha, this left me with extra control points after the union- right where the line tangent should have intersected the circle. Can clean those up by ZOOOMMIIING RIIIGHHHT IN and deleting the nodes from the straight line segment.

i would just eyeball it
but rounded line ends or corners - you can choose in the stroke menu - might help you to make it look more polished
