#DeathNote would have been better if it just ended after L died leaving the reader wondering what happened next as Light, effectively, has the world in his thrall.

@mdmrn Can this actually be considered a hot take when 95% of the community agree? 😝

I’m still pretty sure Bakuman was a series entirely dedicated to meta-commentary on WSJ editors’ demands to keep it running when they wanted to stop.

@mdmrn Death Note would have been better if it ended the way that I understand the original live action movies did - L kills himself via the Death Note, but uses that predetermined death to allow him to feign dying as part of Light’s plans and is thereby able to defeat Light shortly before passing away himself

@pcas Now that could have been an interesting twist. Light / L not dying side by side or at the same time feels like a miss.

But, if they're not giving us that - leaving it grimly open ended, IMO, would have been better.

forkliftcertified,

@mdmrn I've been saying that since the day it came out. Everything after is just a waste and so much less interesting. So I've always considered a middle of the road manga overall.
But people deal in extremes only and lack finesse, so something has to be either unambiguously good or bad. Something they like can't have flaws, for many people.

@forkliftcertified Oh, see Death Note has many flaws, especially in it's treatment of women (this is common with this artist / writing duo IMO).

Personally, I don't love Death Note. I found it interesting, but the back half of the series felt rushed, Near / Mello were odd choices as characters, and apart from Light getting some form of justice, I didn't find the ending very satisfying. But, that's me.

All that said, I found the one-shot sequel story FAR more interesting than the original series (another hot take).

@forkliftcertified But, I mean, a lot of things I like have flaws. I love Your Lie in April, but I get it makes purposeful choices to evoke emotions; Kosei really needs to talk to a therapist to overcome his Mother's death / feelings about how she treated him; and yea, Kaori does, at times, fit the magic pixie dream girl trope.

However, I love the series. For the past 2 years I've re-read it annually in April. Flaws and all, I enjoy it.
