Can someone tell me why and how they view instances as a ? What makes them communities? I see people upset at empowering individuals/users why is that problematic?

DavidBHimself,

@damon I'm afraid we can file this under "Fediverse users not understanding how the Fediverse works but having strong opinions about it" once again...

@DavidBHimself @damon There's one in this very comment section that I blocked for this very reason.

To quote them, "You're talking about social expectations vs technology expectations, which are different" 🤦‍♂️

In other words, what people like that want vs the reality of the situation.

@damon Certain servers allow for local-only posting and on Misskey and its forks, there’s community forums.

Maybe certain servers have active local engagement.

And if you’re on a topical server, maybe people feel community there.

@damon Certain instances like to have certain topics be the main focus of the instance. Like mstdn.ca for Canadian folk or mstdn.games for gaming folk.

Those who view them as communities, probably browse the local timeline a lot and interact with those people the most.🤷‍♂️

@BeAware I understand that but that doesn’t mean that have to be communities. I’m just weary of situations that resemble Big Social but because people can use a different instance and or platform (which is a huge difference) people act as if the behaviour and most of the dynamics aren’t similar

@damon Facts.

Fedi is not a place for a "community". I was just literally explaining their reasoning, not that it makes sense.🤣

@BeAware

Yeah, I often find the “reasoning” to be lacking, nonsensical and often hypocritical. People feel fedi is somehow best suited for communities, I don’t see how.

@damon The only "true" community that's even remotely related to Fedi at all, isn't federated, and it's Truth Social and it should abso-fuckin-lutely stay that way.🤣

jdp23,

Oh please. There are dozens of instances on fedi that are communities: shared norms, people know each other, there’s a distinction between who’s in the community and who’s not. Sure, the largest instances aren’t generally like that, and of course single-person instances aren’t, but there are plenty of good examples - just because you haven’t experienced it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

@damon @BeAware it's because the Fediverse lets anyone run their own little fiefdom, so anyone can pick and choose their members and the rules they must abide by.

@damon @BeAware it's great for petty authoritarians

@schizanon @damon Bruh. You can't just call out .art like that...you might get lied about and added to a list....🤣
