"While belief in has waned a bit nationally, 90% of Floridians still believe it’s real, according to a recent survey by Atlantic University.

Most Floridians — nearly 70% — want both the state and federal governments to do more to address climate change, the study found."

Against the voter:

"As sea levels rise, DeSantis signs bill deleting #ClimateChange mentions from #Florida state law

The wide-ranging law makes several changes to the state’s energy policy – in some cases deleting entire sections of state law that talk about the importance of cutting planet-warming pollution. The bill would also give preferential treatment to natural gas and ban offshore wind energy, even though there are no wind farms planned off Florida’s coast. "

@CelloMomOnCars
Why can't they complete the Florida Utopian dream and make it illegal to mention poverty, disease, crime, hunger and hurricanes? Why do they have to put up with bad things when all you need to do is make unhappy thoughts illegal!?

The shade throwing in this title:

More shade (plus real and serious consequences):

"The bill also ends clean-energy grants and fuel-efficiency standards for government vehicles, encourages more natural-gas use and outlaws wind farms (not that hurricane-prone Florida will ever have any).

As a result of DeSantis ending climate change by fiat, we can expect dozens of insurance companies to return to his state immediately. (As of this writing, no insurance companies had returned to Florida.)"

Meanwhile:

Sea levels are starting to rise faster. Here’s how much South Florida is expecting

"Sea levels are rising, swamping roads and homes in South #Florida. And it’s picked up the pace in recent years.

It took about 80 years for the first foot. The second one will only take 30 years. The next, 20 years. And Florida could see the next foot in merely a decade after that."

@CelloMomOnCars 3.6 million years ago, the last time CO2 levels were as high as they are now, sea levels rose to be 20 metres - over 65 feet - higher than they are now, & mean annual global near-surface temperatures were 3 degrees Celsius higher than pre-industrial.

"#Florida meteorologist goes after DeSantis over climate change rollback

“Please keep in mind, the most powerful #ClimateChange solution is the one you already have in the palm of your hands: the right to vote. And we will never tell you who to vote for, but we will tell you this: We implore you to do your research and know that there are candidates that believe in climate change and that there are solutions, and there are candidates that don’t,” MacLaughlin said."

"When asked if climate is playing a role in the state’s , longtime political consultant and Florida Politics editor Peter Schorsch said, “No, no one is saying that word. But when you ask voters what their top issues are, it’s property insurance, which is directly impacted by the impacting .” He added, “I say that not just as a politico, but as someone who has had their home flooded three times in the last year!”"

@CelloMomOnCars 10% is about the same who believe the world is flat, wonder if it's the same set?

CelloMomOnCars,

@richardknott

I had to look that up. Yes, about 10 percent.
Trump supporter or not, there are too many Americans who think the world is flat (and more who are "unsure"). Whaa?

@CelloMomOnCars 😀
On the plus side, that climate denial is now on par to flat earth belief is a positive

CelloMomOnCars,
@CelloMomOnCars@mastodon.social avatar

That's the thinnest of silver linings, @richardknott

But seriously, the whole amalgamation of denial machines: climate, covid, vaccination, evolution is a very worrisome thing. And it's primed for this election year.

richardknott,
@richardknott@mastodon.social avatar

@CelloMomOnCars yep, we have an election some point this year, and climate is certainly on the agenda. We’ve got healthcare, immigration, Trans rights and benefits on the cards.

"Carrying out a controversial law signed by DeSantis, officials have started moving to repeal [#Florida's] #RenewableEnergy goals.

The goals call for utilities to gradually increase the amount of renewable energy that they produce or buy until reaching 100% renewable energy in 2050.

But a proposal published Wednesday would repeal a rule that includes the goals, saying it is "no longer necessary.""

A Republican pollster asked #Florida voters about energy. The results surprised him

"Floridians of both political parties are overwhelmingly concerned about the #cost of #energy in the state and Florida’s heavy reliance on natural gas as a source of electricity, according to a poll by a Republican strategy firm. It also found that environmental issues will factor into voters’ decisions in the 2024 election.
