This plant is known as ground-ivy, in German also as ‚Gundermann‘ and belongs to the family of Lamiaceae. It is an evergreen, perennial plant and grows widely in Europe and parts of Asia on moist, heavy and fertile soil. It is considered an invasive weed in North America.
The Gundermann plant was used in traditional Germanic medicine going back thousands years and was believed to be a healing and magic plant. Its first written description can be found in Hildegard von Bingen’s medicine and herb book ‚Physica‘ (1150-1160).
