I'm thinking of checking out now that dorsey left, but I can't find a list of bluesky servers/instances. Is the federation feature too new? I just don't wanna do bluesky.social because I don't want the bs of being in a mainstream instance.

@Cheesealicious So, uh… where do I start…

#Bluesky is organized in a very different way than the Fediverse. It's hard to compare 1:1, it's apples to oranges.

Fedi is basically a collection of "instances" that are kind of city-states. Your instance is your UI, your identity, your community and does moderation for you.

On Bluesky, all of this is separated.

@Cheesealicious There isn't really something like a "Bluesky instance".

The thing they launched in February is federation of the "PDSes", the servers that keep your account and all your data. So you can have your own server where you make posts and that you log in and connect through. (right now they're limited to <= 10 accounts on each for this beta phase)

But the PDS isn't really like a Mastodon instance in that it doesn't matter that much which one you're on.

@Cheesealicious The official web UI is at bsky.app, and you can use it (or some other) regardless what PDS you're on. The PDS service generally doesn't have a built-in web UI on its domain like Mastodon instances do.

If you sign up on a Bluesky-owned PDS, you get a handle ***.bsky.social initially, but you can change it at any moment to any domain you own (mine is mackuba.eu). This is completely independent of what PDS you're hosted on.

@Cheesealicious They've also recently launched independent moderation services. So there are a couple teams that are doing their own moderation, and it works in such way that they add "labels" to accounts and posts. You can subscribe to several of these services and request that things like racism or extremism as marked by them are hidden from you.

@Cheesealicious There's also no such thing as "The Algorithm" on Bluesky like on Twitter/Threads. There is instead a system where anyone can built their own "feeds" that pick posts using any filter or algorithm, and there's something like 50k of them right now. You can follow and pin any of them, and now you can even replace the default "Following" feed with some feed that you like.

@Cheesealicious So, on the Fediverse, the instance is your community, your handle, hosts your data, does moderation for you and serves a web UI.

On #Bluesky, you use bsky.app (or 3rd party app) as the UI, host data on the PDS, use any domain as the handle, subscribe to some number of selected moderation services, and use search, hashtags and custom feeds to find interesting content and people.
