flodebarre,

My science Twitter contacts seem much more enthusiastic about Bluesky than Mastodon. The greatest criticism I have heard about Mastodon is its decentralized nature; people were afraid of being stuck in silos. As far as I understand, is also decentralized, yet this does not seem to be how is how it is perceived. It seems like an opportunity has been missed here.
What do you think?

@flodebarre Is it true that the people who necessitated the #TwitterMigration are the same people behind #Bluesky?

#Mastodon #Fediverse #Twitter #Science

alxsim,

@bibliolater @flodebarre If you mean that the billionaire who sold twitter to X is the same person that created bluesky then yes

@alxsim @flodebarre Pretty much so. Are the two (X and Bluesky) still connected to each other?

alxsim,

@bibliolater @flodebarre Not that I know of. I'm not an expert at all, I'm on neither of them.

alxsim,

@flodebarre Yeah Bluesky is selling their decentralized concept, while in practice it's centralized as they only have one server controlled by the company.
I guess it's also a question of open-source culture, as some people will be wary of trusting random groups of people on the internet rather than large companies. "Nothing is free, there must be a trick"

FoucPerotin,

@alxsim @flodebarre Open source, really decentralized and really federated, non capitalistic, no commercial use of our data. That is the culture of the fediverse. In my opinion, the only real problem with mastodon is the user experience with web access or official app. It’s much better with a good app. (I like Ivory for iOS and there is Tusky for Android) There is nothing like silo, just less people and no algorithm to find interesting accounts, so it takes more time. The use of hashtags help.

alxsim,

@FoucPerotin @flodebarre for example the algorithm is not something set in stone. It is something interesting to think that you can have truly open algorithms that can be tuned personally, and I've seen some proposals about that.

FoucPerotin,

@alxsim Sure, but I like the no-algorithm simplicity. We have enough tools for my use
– following people, of course
– following press accounts (some are Twix mirrors, but it is usefull)
– following some hashtags
– for some people who do not post very much, beeing noticed for each post they send
These mixed tools make my happy. And at every moment, I know what I get, and why I get it. I feel more free with that than otherwise.
@flodebarre

alxsim,

@FoucPerotin @flodebarre
@FoucPerotin Two points that are missing for me is better list management (for example filtering out people in a list from the timeline and a way to add hashtags to lists) but I think it's coming.

FoucPerotin,

@alxsim @flodebarre I feel close to the opinion developped in this article :

"Mastodon is far from perfect. But I only have so many hours in the day, and only so many days left in my life. I would much rather spend those precious hours making a open service better than using a temporarily superior closed one. I have seen that movie. I know how it ends."
