Are abstract paintings more like writing without words, or songs without lyrics?

@john i think they are more like music without lyrics

@john What is writing without words?

I have been known to use musical analogies to describe my art, so I'd go for song without lyrics, but for me, my artwork is like telling a story in a non-narrative way in a different language.

@artcollisions yes, I suppose I meant something like the structure and rhythm of writing, maybe with nonsense words

@artcollisions nope, thought of a way better example: Jabberwocky.

@john the problem with nonsense words is that our brains are working to make sense of the sounds the way we normally would and I think that's fundamentally doing something different than what abstract visual art does.

I'll bet @haverholm has some thoughts for us!

@john adding this thought -- some abstract art does look like gibberish words sound :D

john,
@john@sauropods.win avatar

@artcollisions yeah, I think a lot of abstract art does look like gibberish ‘things’.

artcollisions,
@artcollisions@vis.social avatar

@john ah, have you done any abstract art?

john,
@john@sauropods.win avatar

@artcollisions I think this is pretty close.

artcollisions,
@artcollisions@vis.social avatar

@john Oooh, that doesn't look gibberish to me at all!

But now I can see what you are talking about. If we think of syllables as moveable elements, you are taking different moveable elements and sort of collaging them in a new way (the way syllables would turn into gibberish), so this is one kind of abstract art and one where our brains are trying to make sense of the elements presented.

Are there different types of abstract art?

@artcollisions well sure, here’s my most abstract dinosaur peice, there’s no remixing, but the style is so extreme it’s getting hard to see.

artcollisions,
@artcollisions@vis.social avatar

@john mmmm dreamy! I like how it's shadowy and there is a suggestion of creatures. Also, layers. Layers are always good. :D

john,
@john@sauropods.win avatar

@artcollisions thanks. For me, I find complete abstraction rather boring, so I play around at the edges.

artcollisions,
@artcollisions@vis.social avatar

@john I'm not sure where I fit in the abstract art. I think not well (as per usual). I like making up rules for myself.

john,
@john@sauropods.win avatar

@artcollisions my rule is: do I like it? Can I do it? Do it.

@john They're more like playing tennis without a net.
