🧵 [1/2]

In the late 1980s I was a young Amiga game dev and "demo-scene" guy, member of the Digital Force International.

Back then, I liked an Amiga music track called Journey Through Galaxy, by Darius Zendeh, a.k.a. Mark II.

To surprise a friend in those days, I made this a cappella tribute to the track with our composer Ramon Braumuller, using our sampled voices.

The original track follows in the next post…

@metin Funny ;) I also made a few silly tunes with only friends voices, for a laugh. I was pretty fascinated by the ability of a tracker to “pitch” voices (really just speeding up and slowing down) and turn it into an instrument.

@yth 😃👍 Wij hebben ook een hele reeks van zulke tunes gemaakt. Veel mensen bleken later onze Nederlandstalige "Douche it" parodie op Salt 'n' Pepa's Push it te kennen. 🙂

@metin Haha so much fun. I think I heard this before a long time ago!

This is the original Amiga music track called Journey Through Galaxy, by Darius Zendeh, a.k.a. Mark II.

Check the previous post in this thread for the a cappella wink to this track I made with our music composer Ramon Braumuller in the late 1980s.

@metin Cool tracks, I like them both! Do you remember how long it took the two of you to make your version?

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@daniel Thanks Daniel, appreciated!

I guess it only took a few hours to make it. First we recorded our voices using an 8-bit sound sampler connected to the Amiga. Ramon is very skilled in typing in the right musical notes and correct timing with intervals in a tracker-type music editor, and he added some little twists of his own as well, such as the voice drum solo.

If you listen carefully, we also used a little sample from the original Amiga track, but played faster and as an arpeggio.

@metin Wow, that's quick. I thought it would have taken at least a couple of days! Even though I think I have some talent for music, I'm always amazed at what really good musicians can do!

You mean the part in the middle of the song that sounds like an old modem dialing in? 😁

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@daniel 👍 Can I listen to your music somewhere online?

Indeed, it's the "dialing modem" part, haha. 😁

@metin There is one recording (with my punk band in abysmal quality) of the song I wrote after the catastrophe in Fukushima: https://youtu.be/lU6UhWbVWKw

But most of the time I write down guitar tabulatures (alternative notation for string instruments) or piano sheet music (which I try to teach myself since a few years).

@daniel I like it! The guitar riffs really sound like old school late-1970s Punk, and the singer's voice and style reminds me of Blur's lead singer Damon Albarn.

What piano music do you like? I love Chopin (particularly his Nocturnes), Satie's Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes, and Beethoven's Mondschein Sonate, to name a few. Moody classical compositions in minor keys. 🙂

@metin Thanks Metin, I really appreciate it! 😄

Blur was one of our big influences back then! The singer and I go back a long way and started making music at his parents' house where they had a drum set. Those are fond memories!

Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata is also one of my favorites! I also like pieces by Grieg and Tchaikovsky (but not so much the piano ones). I'm also very fond of blues and jazz music.

This is one of my favorite piano jazz songs:

@metin Although not a real piano piece, I really like The Ocean by Clinton Shorter. It's such a beautiful song that I want to arrange for piano one day:

@daniel Nice track indeed. 👍

You might also like the atmospheric film scores of Cliff Martinez, such as his score for the Solaris remake:

@metin You're right, it fits quite well stylistically! The use of the synthesizer reminds me of the excellent soundtrack of the game Endless Space 2 by FlybyNo:

While we're on the subject, Pedro Camacho, who is doing the music for Star Citizen, also composes in a similar style, a good example being the song "First Light":

@daniel Nice! Thanks for the tips. I like First Light the most.

@daniel Very nice track indeed!

When it comes to Jazz, I love Pat Metheny, among many others. I particularly love Pat Metheny's Au Lait. It's like a cross-over between Jazz and Ambient:
