The field of is such junk pseudo science at this point. Which other field has its equivalent of Nobel prize winners going absolutely bonkers? Between him and Hinton and Yoshua Bengio (his brother has the complete opposite view at least) clown town is getting crowded.

@timnitGebru with the same quality measures they can stop writing research papers altogether, if 100M bad papers are as good as producing one seminal one

oddhack,
@oddhack@mstdn.social avatar

@timnitGebru a real AI would conclude that the correct way to decarbonize is to kill all the humans and let LLMs solve any remaining problems.

oddhack,
@oddhack@mstdn.social avatar

@timnitGebru not a Nobel winner, but "elderly and distinguished scientist" / popularizer Michio Kaku was on NPR a few months back waxing eloquent about how quantum computers are going to give us AI, solve all medical problems, communicate with parallel universes, etc., etc. The only part of the entire interview where he made sense was a few parenthetical comments about LLMs not being that great :-)

Not sure what "field" Kaku is in for the last many decades other than publicity, though.

@timnitGebru

What they seem to be saying is: "to get the full environmental benefit of AI we not only have to make the "replaced" person redundant, we have to kill and eat them too."

cmeier,

@timnitGebru #AI is alchemy, not science. Alchemy gave us some useful inventions, but did so mostly by accident with no understanding of how to explain why adding an eye of newt to your iron sword did nothing useful.

@timnitGebru Knowing Tomlinson's work I tend to think that this pre-print is actually a troll that successfully hit its target (especially looking at their lastest publications). Or maybe Tomlinson et al went crazy.

@timnitGebru LeCun works for Zuckerberg and sees it as his duty to shill for Meta. He’s not worth your time.

flarion,

@timnitGebru "clown town" 😂😂😂

These clownshoes mfs i swear to god. I just know this is going to be featured in Fresh AI Hell next Mystery AI Hype Theater

@khorish Yes. Submitting for consideration @alex and @emilymbender

Not the tweet itself, but the paper it's about was already featured in Ep 12 -- It's All Hell!

The irony is that two of the authors wrote an entirely unhinged paper in 2013 about computing when sustainability efforts fail and civilizations collapse. That paper bases its premise on such significant and rigorous scholarship as... wait for it... Jared Diamond. (????)

This is the most WTF thing I've seen all day.

alex,

@dawnnafus @emilymbender @timnitGebru @khorish wow. Do you have a link to that paper?

dawnnafus,
@dawnnafus@mastodon.social avatar

@alex @emilymbender @timnitGebru @khorish

https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/2493431

To be fair there are other papers in that genre that are much better. Some of the other authors have gone on to do great work. This one, though... yikes.

@emilymbender @timnitGebru @alex

OOOOO I forgot!

@timnitGebru did they factor in the lifestyles of the people getting rich from “”””ai””””?

muzzle,

@timnitGebru Maybe they used an ai to generate the paper and all the plots inside.

But, to be honest, many actual Nobel prize winners have gone absolutely bonkers, supporting anything from climate science denialism to eugenics.

jeffsussna,
@jeffsussna@mastodon.social avatar

@timnitGebru it's been that way for 70+ years. Maybe the letters A and I do something to our brains

hackborn,

@timnitGebru Interesting, I believe this is the same B. Tomlinson who published Collapse Informatics back in 2013. There's a real whiff of eugenicist lifeboat ethics to this.

MonniauxD,

@timnitGebru It seems to me about all fields with Nobel laureates have had people making, how can I say it, "controversial" statements.

Let us forget about old cases such as Philipp Lenard, and mention cases such as Luc Montagnier.

MonniauxD,

@timnitGebru It's certainly not on the same order of things, but I'm also troubled by Roger Penrose's mixture of Gödel incompleteness, quantum mechanics and biology to sort of prove the existence of the soul.

    Part of the conclusion is that AI performs better than a computer. 😕

    froztbyte,

    @timnitGebru I realize you're just snapshotting the crazy here, and I'm going to reflect these thougts in this reply, but

    what the fucking what at that tweet

    "using generative AI.... than with the help of a computer"

    I'M SORRY, FUCKING WHAT

    did we suddenly find other not-computer ways on which to magically run synth-ML outputs? (no, of course we didn't)

    wow that's some sloppy bullshit. even by their standards it's some sloppy bullshit.

    @timnitGebru Luc Montagnier, unfortunately. He can be directly credited with 15-20 000 COVID deaths from COVID alone in France alone.

    Thanks for passing the information - I knew for LeCun, but for others it was less obvious.

    natalie_perret,

    @timnitGebru so most of their claims should be taken with a huge pinch of salt?
    (sorry I'm just trying to wrap my heads around all the hype in the field and it's hard to tell what is true / reliable and what isn't).

    sethrichards,

    @timnitGebru That kind of makes me want to read the paper just to see how hard they cooked the books to get the desired outcome.

    Imagine looking at those absolute garbagefire charts and thinking, "Well this is interesting and worthy of consideration." Dude needs to ask his doctor about the likelihood of brain worms being accountable for his cognitive decline.

    _siddharthsoni,

    @timnitGebru No other serious academic field today has a mainstream view that is bogus, pseudoscientific, or otherwise totally misguided, with serious scholars trying to subvert it from the margins, that much can be said about 'AI studies'
