44100 Hz or 48000 Hz for ?
Personally I usually go with 48000 Hz because it somehow feels more "natural" to me than 44100 Hz (as half of 96000 Hz or a quarter of 192000 Hz). Made my life easier a few times when I wanted to for too.

Are you trying to have a religions discussion? 🤪

Personally I go for 48khz because most things I mix down originate from my Allen&Heath SQ5 mixing console that records to USB storage at 48khz. (Yes, it could record half the amount of channels at 96khz, but I do not own the new stage boxes, so AD conversion happens at 48khz anyways.)

Some say it can be beneficial to always mix down recordings at 96khz since this could enhance the performance of plugins that don't do oversampling.

To my knowledge, Ardour cannot run processing at 96khz in a 48khz hardware setup, I think I remember that Reaper could do this.

I do a lot of sound for video, so 48khz seems to make sense – until you find out that YouTube converts it to 44.1 for you anyways… but probably you're losing more in their conversion to Opus anyways, so it doesn't matter.

@nielso Thanks for sharing! 😊 I chose 48 mainly because of video production (too). And because 2 times 48 equals 96 or 4 times that equals 192 and so on. 🫣

@amadeus 48 because it syncs to video easier and gives that very slight benefit in the antialiasing filter without making your computer work too much harder.

@thebishopgame Interesting point about the antialiasing. Thanks for sharing! 😊

@amadeus you can't hear the difference. However if you switch back and forth a few times you can hear the difference. Some effects benefit from more as well, because they introduce some noise. If you are doing live more means faster buffers and so can be better, but this is about latency which doesn't matter in a recording (though most studios are doing some live at the same time as recording). Most of the time though you can't hear the difference so don't make a big deal about it.

@bluGill I hadn't really thought about whether 44.1 or 48 would affect the sound, to be honest. The difference in resolution seems so small, right? But I'd like to do some listening on that aspect sometime. Thanks for sharing! 😊

@amadeus The difference in resolution comes into play above 22khz. The best human ear can only hear below 20khz. If you are recording for a dog you need more resolution, but not the human ear. (or of course trans coding repeatedly between the two will get you eventually as errors add up)

@amadeus 48k just because it‘s pretty much standard for post production and Mastering. People say there‘s mathmatically more headroom but that might be a bit esoteric

@dukeitch Thanks for sharing! I was aware that 48 was the "standard" in post production, but not in relation to mastering. Interesting.

@amadeus

Did 44.1k for years because it was native for CDs. Switched to 48k and encouraged others to do so a few years ago because I like the extra room for LPF and not having to make them so steep.

@billyjoebowers Interesting aspect, thanks for sharing!

@amadeus Went for 48k a while ago because a friend of mine suggested it's more flexible. Never asked why and now I just use it out of habit 🤔

@graves501 I don't think you're doing anything that would put you at a disadvantage. 😊
