Hivemind: i need your help!

What are people using nowadays as an alternative to #Evernote (on Windows) ?

Preferably an alternative in which I can import existing notes.

Update: so... I installed and tried the following apps:

  • Joplin
  • Notable
  • Notesnook
  • Obsidian

After importing my Evernote notes and evaluating the result and interface of each, the winner is.... 🥁

@joplinapp !

@jrf_nl @joplinapp I've been using Joplin for a while. It does not get the buzz that others do. It's simple and straightforward, though. Cross-platform, open source, plain text files, syncing if you want, and MD support.

@jrf_nl@phpc.social avatar

@kevin Plain text ? I turned encryption on and it looks to work well.

Syncing via WebDAV took a moment to figure out, but got that working too.

@jrf_nl Can you explain why @joplinapp is the winner? Or is it more about a personal taste?

I'm myself looking to move from Evernote and are very interested to learn more 😃

jrf_nl,
@jrf_nl@phpc.social avatar

@tvbeek Definitely an aspect of personal taste, but as an Evernote (v6) user, the interface is familiar.

Other things on the plus side:

  • Notes and tags were imported correctly from Evernote.
  • Turning on note encryption was straight forward.
  • Getting it set up to sync with Stack can be done via WebDAV and once I knew that, setting it up was easy enough.
  • There are also quite some plugins available to add extra functionality.

The one thing I miss:

  • Nested tags.

Hope that helps ;-)

@jrf_nl this helps a lot, thanks!

@jrf_nl I imported my existing Evernote notes to Notesnook last year. Been happy with my move.

#Evernote #Notesnook

@jrf_nl@phpc.social avatar

@redcrew Interesting. I'd been looking at that and was curious why nobody had mentioned it so far.

The one thing I'm hesitant about is the 5 tag limit in the free version as that sounds very very limiting. Also feels like a bit of a lock-in as the export options seem limited as well (in the free version) and buying a Pro version to leave doesn't sound right to me.

@redcrew@mstdn.social avatar

@jrf_nl I like that it's encrypted end-to-end and open source. And their focus on privacy, design, and helpful documentation.

I had thousands of notes in Evernote. I didn't have any notes with 5 or more tags, but before I moved, I did a major notes cleanup.

Understand your concern about purchase. For me, because Notesnook has a 30-day guarantee, I chose the Pro plan. Cost was less than my annual Evernote plan. I figured if I didn't like it, I'd ask for a refund.

@jrf_nl@phpc.social avatar

@redcrew Re: tags - I originally read it as 5 tags total (which would be a problem), not 5 tags per note (which is fine).

But the import from Evernote did not go smoothly, so I ended up with Joplin now.

redcrew,
@redcrew@mstdn.social avatar

@jrf_nl Sorry to hear the import didn't go well.

How is Joplin working out for you?

I'm curious, how many notes/notebooks did you have in Evernote?

jrf_nl,
@jrf_nl@phpc.social avatar

@redcrew Time will tell.

I only had one notebook and ~500 notes, so nothing too interesting.

sebastienserre,

@jrf_nl If you own a Synology NAS you can host your notes thanks to Synology Notes.
I was using Joplin (with notes stored in a webdav on the Synology) before going directly with the native app.
It works great and my data are at home
Evernote => Note Station: https://kb.synology.com/en-my/DSM/tutorial/How_to_migrate_Evernote_notebooks_to_Note_Station

jrf_nl,
@jrf_nl@phpc.social avatar

@sebastienserre I'll have a look, but I don't have a NAS setup, so I think that may be something for a later date.

@jrf_nl I've been happy with Obsidian (I'm on Mac, but it is cross-platform). Also heard good things about logseq.

Importing evernote into Obsidian was quite possible, when I did it a year+ ago, but I found it to be helpful to keep the imported content in a separate vault from my main content. This prevented malformed Evernote content (e.g., recipe imports) from breaking obsidian's neat linking and graphing features.

jrf_nl,
@jrf_nl@phpc.social avatar

@kboyd That's good to know. Will have a look. Thanks!

@jrf_nl It’s opinionated, but Obsidian works on Windows and is also pretty cool.

jrf_nl,
@jrf_nl@phpc.social avatar

@zackkatz Thanks! I'll have a look, though their website note really working in my go-to browser does not yet fill me with confidence ;-)

jmslbam,

@jrf_nl @zackkatz same here, using Obsidian because of the markdown and possibility to sync the files with whatever protocol I want.

lucp,

@jmslbam @jrf_nl @zackkatz +1 for obsidian.

jeckel,

@lucp @jmslbam @jrf_nl @zackkatz +1 again for Obsidian

jrf_nl,
@jrf_nl@phpc.social avatar

@jeckel @lucp @jmslbam @zackkatz @DLMax Interesting to see so many Obsidian users, while they don't support native sync with cloud services (paid add-on).

What is your experience with that ?

I was hoping to use it with sync via Stack.

lucp,
@lucp@toot.re avatar

I just tend to sync it via git 😊

jmslbam,

@lucp @jrf_nl I use Google Drive (I know... I know..) and use it just like I would sync with Stack. Just point Obsidian to a folder inside your Stack directory. Syncing to mobile with GDrive is not possible. At least not natively, but you don't have a smart phone, so no worries there.

If you use the WebDAV protocol on Stack, then first create a new backup path (noem je dat zo daar?) and drop your notes there. Because they need to be on your disk.

Hoop dat ik het juist uitleg! 😄

jrf_nl,
@jrf_nl@phpc.social avatar

@jmslbam @lucp Ha, that's good to know. Thanks. Am hoping to try it early next week.

jeckel,

@jrf_nl @lucp @jmslbam @zackkatz @DLMax since it's only text based files (mostly Markdown) you can you use any cloud/drive solution (Dropbox, one drive, google drive...)
There is also a plugin to sync with a git repository, this is really good to keep track of versions of notes

@grmpyprogrammer Thanks for the heads-up. Will have a look at it.
