Canada’s bird watchers have a front row seat to climate change - The Globe and Mail

@dmacphee "Along with the perennial plea to keep cats indoors (domestic cats are believed to kill upward of two billion birds each year in North America alone) Birds Canada provides resources for how to plant and maintain a bird-friendly habitat in your backyard and put up window treatments to prevent bird strikes at home."

If you have a cat, yes, cats can be happy to live indoors, like a pet should, so keep it inside or have a caged kennel area outdoors.

Really sad about the Canada Jays.

@CStamp @Daveography @dmacphee I can't actually believe they're remotely close to the lion's share of the problem. It seems like grocery store plastic bags: absolutely not helpful for our natural world, fair in principle to be concerned about, but a rounding error compared to the ongoing devastation caused by major industries and as such naturally pushed to make it seem like individual choices can solve things rather than us needing to fundamentally change entire industries and economic systems.

@keithzg @dmacphee @Daveography Birds? Returning migrants have an issue with reduced habitat and cats are killing significant numbers. Plus, if a dog were in your yard, digging your garden & using it as a littler box, running in the road, getting into your garbage, most people would be indignant. As for the damage they are doing being the little murderers they are, they ARE making a significant impact. Comparing it to plastic makes no sense. People need to be responsible for their pets.

@CStamp @dmacphee @Daveography Compared to the entire forests we keep cutting down to cover in treeless yards surrounded by concrete and pavement? The pollutants we spew out into the air the birds fly in and the water they drink, the pesticides in the bugs and plants they eat?

But it uhh sounds like you have a real personal hatred for cats so maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree here. (But man, any cat that can get into garbage in Edmonton, give that cat a Nobel Prize!)

@keithzg @dmacphee @CStamp @Daveography I love cats & had one who used to free roam - my first cat. I stopped doing that & spent a lot of time to leash train her - after seeing too many cats killed by cars, by digesting toxic plants, ingesting antifreeze or getting super sick after catching rodents that ingested rat poison. Some cat lovers I know built catios for safety. My cat gets lots of outdoors time but is safely supervised. He's not unhappy at all.

@keithzg @dmacphee @CStamp @Daveography We also now know, from scientists that several deathly to animals(and humans) viruses from rodents & birds can be passed to cats who catch diseased prey. Our cats depend on us to feed them/keep them safe. We're guardians & should really make best decisions for any animals we are taking care of. Safety is part of responsible, furever guardianship. Our human convenience shouldn't be top priority - wellness & safety of animals who depend on us, supercedes.
