@metin to add to the depressing numbers before someone tries to defend it, a huge portion of this is over-consumption in rich countries like the US, and even just looking at the cows, each one takes a STAGGERING amount of food, water, and land to raise, the only reason meat is so cheap is it's massively subsidized over the alternatives, which was done in the mid 1900's to "prove" we were better than communist countries and we could afford to eat meat every day. (irony using govt funds for this)

@metin even more depression to add, 25 people can live very well off of the same resources required to produce meat for a single person, it's INCREDIBLY wasteful, and on top of that in the US/UK/etc over 25% of meat produced is thrown out. It's also one of the biggest sources of environmental destruction and greenhouse gasses, huge amounts of forest are cut down for room for more cattle. The whole industry is a net loss and relies on govt propping it up....

@raptor85 Yes, humanity made quite a mess of the world, and the process is still ongoing, despite rising awareness.

@metin It's crazy too how often you get people defending meat and dairy quoting how "wasteful" stuff like almonds are, completely ignoring that in just water usage, what they tend to use, almond milk takes around 100 gallons of water to produce per gallon, but cow milk takes around 1000 gallons while not producing nearly the nutritional value! It's pure insanity, it's an industry that even alone is driving us and many other species towards extinction.

pollute_my_lungs,

@raptor85 @metin I’ll never forget that time Boris Yeltsin toured a grocery store in America and mesmerized by all the choices we had. It was all garbage food and in our capitalist society we have food deserts, and shitty and expensive produce.

werawelt,

@raptor85
The calculation against communism probably did not work out. There have been many of these "hell houses" in China for some time. The areas and dimensions are huge. Everything there is full of #animal suffering. For example, near the city of Nanyang there is such an area with 105,000 mother #animals and 2.1 million #pigs annually. Per high-rise building 5000 pigs vegetate there.

@werawelt @metin a lot of that started in 1950-1975 as basically an international dick waving contest to prove that your country was the best because your people could eat the most meat, using tax money to keep it cheap, even cheaper than the crops to raise it! which basically skyrocketed meat consumption during that time period, only barely starting to fall off again post 2010. Having meat as the core of every meal was a very recent thing.

werawelt,

@raptor85 Yes, unfortunately, a sad development. The Chinese have also been participating for a long time. In the past, many good vegetable meals were widespread there and now one is also there of the opinion, to eat dead animals would have something to do with prosperity + reputation. 😒 Of course, the builders and the equipment manufacturers for the full-body cages of the animal mothers, in which they have to vegetate almost all year round, also earn money from the buildings.
