steveorevo,

How retro kick ass is that? Flash is resurrected sans the neglected, proprietary, security ridden, plugin bs of Adobe; thanks to Rust, and modern day sandboxed WebAssembly. No plugin required; small, compact, compatible engine, that unlocks decades of lost SWF content in all its vector visuals, MP3 stereo, and ActionScript-y glory. https://github.com/ruffle-rs/ruffle #flash #adobe #webdev #javascript #rust #retrogaming

@steveorevo https://z0r.de can live on forever thanks to ruffle :)

Completely coincidentally, @steveorevo @andypiper, I was just thinking of this seminal Flash music video today, and am now wondering if it could live again outside of a YouTube intermediary. https://youtu.be/BGQmmDEDYiI

@ThatChipGuy @steveorevo I suspect the first challenge would be the original source / Flash code for the video, which I’m failing to locate from a brief search. The Ruffle player is not able to load the archived site in the Wayback Machine due to CORS.

steveorevo,

@andypiper @ThatChipGuy yeah, sounds like some server side proxy magic might be in order.

@steveorevo it has already crashed Firefox a few times 😳

steveorevo,

@peturdainn ouch. Send a big report to Mozilla. WebAssembly should be sandboxed. But that does pose a good Q. Also Rust’s memory protection shouldn’t crash the (Firefox) parent.

@steveorevo I've let the build-in crashreporter do its thing

davep,

@steveorevo Homestar Runner time 😁

@steveorevo does this mean that Homestar runner is available again?

ksaj,

@loke @steveorevo Similar to what I was thinking. There were a lot of flash games, and also animations that disappeared, and are ripe for retro return.

steveorevo,

@loke looks like quite a few swf files are available to download; and it looks like archive.org is using Ruffle right-out-of-the-box just for that. Not sure which version, playback compatibility may vary. https://archive.org/search?query=creator%3A%22The+Brothers+Chaps%22

@loke @steveorevo Homestar Runner switched to using Ruffle a few years ago. There's a few pages and games which don't quite work yet, but everything else runs perfectly: https://homestarrunner.com/post-flash-update

@steveorevo Ok, my first thought: why? But this is actually super cool.

ShrikeTron,
@ShrikeTron@mstdn.social avatar

@pilhofer @steveorevo There was also a lot of useful interactive tools and demos for science and tech written in Flash.

It's a shame that was lost, and complete PITA to rebuild in "html5".

Though I guess can't wait to hear about the security exploits in Rust discovered via Flash emulation, lol.

@pilhofer @steveorevo so that I can play ragdoll invaders, dolphin Olympics and line rider again.

@pilhofer @steveorevo why? so you can watch this all day long! https://z0r.de/39
