everyone’s talking about the python layoffs but the and layoffs seem to have flown under the radar. from a mobile dev perspective they are more concerning regarding google’s commitment to its supposedly first class cross platform development ecosystem

On #climate and jet engines, anyone anywhere talking about encouraging more efficient #overSea travel?

For decades, I have been keeping an eye out for aircraft designed to fly mostly low, within the range of ground effect. Close to the ground, lift is significantly greater and flight is much more efficient.

Over water, a pilot wouldn't have to worry about hitting trees and obstacles. An ocean-going aircraft utilizing ground effect could be twice as large and still more efficient than a jet.

@travisfw ekranoplans have a host of issues most of them pertaining to the weather. there's a reason the soviet efforts never ventured beyond the caspian sea.

as for fuel efficiency, there are huge benefits switching from 4 engine to 2 engine planes along w/improved ETOPS. think flying on a 777 instead of a 747.

In a #saneSociety we would have #kids earlier: when we have the energy to keep up with them. We would be supported by family, and even neighbors, not given up on and isolated. It would be the beginning of our adult lives. Maybe the first of many happy relationships. We would learn as we teach our kids. From them, about how to be young and joyful: the essence of life. We would also learn much from their teachers, who would teach to the whole social organism, not just the children.

@travisfw personally I found it tough to justify having kids while I was still loaded up with student debt, hats off to folks who can make it work

@travisfw appreciates the kind thoughts, fortunately my student loans are in the past but I too am doing everything I can to ensure my own kids don’t have to carry that burden

I am prepping an initial release of a set of bash functions I have been using for a while to make unix time more useful and easy to parse visually. It names levels of precision as year, month, day, and time.

I was inspired to write this years ago when I was naming and rotating logs and realized when Unix time is represented as hexadecimal the whole thing is 8 digits and various substrings actually match up not too badly with the length of Gregorian units on a log scale.

@travisfw I’m intrigued

question for other devs out there. is there a way to get the predictability of reproducible versioning between dev and deployed without having to lock down your package.json to exact versions? concern is that locking down versions now introduces a quarterly upgrade cycle that sucks up dev time. i'm also not a fan of dependabot's yarn.lock only updates.

this whole convo started w/ 13.3.1 release with a nasty bug.

@assaf that’s something we’re considering, locking core dependencies and letting others float, thank you for the suggestion
