@shrikant @mastodonindians Heard the guy shouted "Modi-Yogi" after the incident?

shibaprasad, to random

Just yesterday I was saying it here: the world would be a better place if more people start writing blogs.

Here is an article about it:

Nobody cares about your blog.

https://www.alexmolas.com/2023/07/15/nobody-cares-about-your-blog.html

shibaprasad,

@Deus Absolutely. That's one of the only purposes for my old FB account.

Ironically, I have written a post about this! :-D

@meconiumhead @asuph @mastodonindians What is a questionable enough taste though?

Is listening to Tum To Thehre Pardesi by Altaf Raja around 6 AM in the morning questionable enough?

shibaprasad, to mastodonindians

This is spot on.

I remember when BJP first came to power. Times did a big cover: Modi means Business and put MMS as the underachiever. Sanghis at that time rejoiced and praised Times so much.

Fast forward to 2019, Times painted Modi as the divider in chief. Bhakts were furious. Called it a foreign propaganda.

Attaching the cover pics here too.

Has this opposition unity thingy ever worked?

I remember, while growing up, there was the third front in 2009. The results were very poor.

Even this time too I think it will fail massively. @mastodonindians

shibaprasad,

@nita @gokuldas @mastodonindians Absolutely.

I.N.D.I.A basically has gifted BJP the 2024 election, already. Just imagine CPIM Congress fighting against eachother in Kerala, AAP Congress in Punjab, Delhi. CPIM TMC in West Bengal. Then they're sharing the stage and boasting about fighting BJP and fascism and what not.

How idiotic.

Even if sees a constant rotation of green, saffron and red in power in the coming years, nothing will really change. A top-down approach won’t work, only a bottom-up one will.

A very useful feature that I haven't been using enough is "Hide post" that displays the post as if it had used the CW feature, even when it didn't.

This allows you to show/hide individual posts in your timeline even when they might normally take up a lot of vertical space.

@trunksapp

shibaprasad,

@tcely is the notification working for you? I quite liked the app but couldn't use because of that broken feature.

Wow. That's an intriguing chain of threads. I want to reply to all of them.

  1. Very very common in other the walk of life. I sometimes get very cautious about it (not the predatory part). And ask myself thrice "Am I mansplaining it?"

  2. That is so creepy. I think your teacher was just a creep.

On the casteism thing, was this the first time in your life that someone told you that? Because for me (I am also a Bramhin), I was told that by relatives and others many times. It gets very irritating too. Like I don't want to take credit of this thing. Stop praising me for that. Even the last time when I was back home someone said "wearing the thread is a matter of pride, not everybody gets to do it". It was awkward when I said that it has been almost 8 years since I had worn one. :-P

I have heard about the last point from friends that education is filmmaking is something that many can't afford. Specially I think in private colleges and universities? In West Bengal, JU has a comparatively good and cheaper program. Profs are also chill.

shibaprasad, to Podcasts

Fellow , what are your favourite Podcasts? Specially made in or about India?

My two favorites:

  1. The seen and the unseen
  2. Puliyabazi

I also like 3 things by the Indian Express. But they're just news bites.

Suggest me some! The topics can be anything.

@mastodonindians

shibaprasad,

@shrikant @mastodonindians @ngkabra Mostly wanted the first two. But even for the third, there will be some Indian perspective. Subscribed already. :-)

I don't think this gets covered enough in the mainstream media. But the bloodbath during polls in is concerning. And it will happen again, today.

Don't know if we need a top down change or a bottms up change, but this just pains me to see my state in this condition.

shibaprasad,

@Deus @mastodonindians The coverage is there (like you said with channels supporting their fav party).

But my biggest worry is how normalised it is now. And no one tries to change it.

Already 8 have died now.

So has been reduced to just a medium to watch braless women bouncing their tities in your face, or has the algorithm just finally figured me out?

@freemo I think it is both. :P

Bhakts want to send Mr Yogi Adityanath to France to stop the riots. Whereas it has been more than 2 months since Manipur is burning and their supreme leader hasn't paid a single visit.

Shambolic.

@mastodonindians

shibaprasad, to datascience

What are some good blogs/newsletters to follow related to Analytics/Data Science/Operations Research?

Any suggestions?

TDS and some other medium blogs seem very cluttered nowadays. It is quantity over quality for them but I am looking for the opposite.

For OR, I follow these two blogs:

  1. Yet another math programming consultant
  2. OR in an OB world

Any suggestions?

josiah, to rust

Stop staying you can't put R in prod. :rstat:

I made a blog post with my thoughts and reactions.

#rstats #rust #putRinprod

https://josiahparry.com/posts/2023-07-06-r-is-still-fast.html

shibaprasad,

@josiah @orizuru Tbh, it is not a total presumption. I primarily work in #rstats and have faced the same issues.

The DevOps team told the same to one of my teammates. And the Plumber library had some authentication issues related to UMS2 IIRC.

We adapted databricks quickly and found a way to call the R scripts from a Python notebook.

Even on #Databricks, the support of R is so poor!

shibaprasad,

@josiah @orizuru Haha kinda had the same experience. We had a 3 hours long interaction with them, they were clueless for most of the R stuffs. And our team mostly uses R. For ML-OR-Analytics, everything.

When we attended a hands-on workshop, the presenter said "R lovers, sorry to say, it is time to move on. It used to be cool but not anymore." (paraphrased)

Welp--back on here because today lost the entirety of its mind. First checked in, couldn't, got the error message that the problem was at their end and they're working on it.

Tried again, got in, and got a solid string of error 504 Gateway Timeout messages.

Then for a while it behaved itself, so I left the keyboard to check on the caterpillar livestock and came back to strings upon strings of rate limit errors and I didn't do a damn thing.

Then I got a couple Notifications, checked those out without getting blocked from 'em, then went back to the Federated feed. Got another string of rate limit errors but proceeded to read the feed with no hangups...except one.

When I went from Notifications to Federated, it took nearly forever to load.

Go home QOTO, you're drunk.

shibaprasad,

@ClaraListensprechen You should tag @freemo when you have these issues.

shibaprasad,

@freemo @claralistensprechen3rd @ClaraListensprechen

I have this weird problem of QOTO not opening from the personal PC. But it opens from the Tor browser or from Mobile through the same WIFI. Think it started happening after I updated my Windows.

दिन कुछ ऐसे गुज़ारता है कोई

दिल में कुछ यूं संभालता हूं ग़म
जैसे ज़ेवर संभालता है कोई

आइना देख कर तसल्ली हुई

Dil me kuch yun sambhalta hun gham

shibaprasad,

@arunmani @mastodonindians That's okay. You should do it. The good thing about CSE is getting a job is comparatively easier. You can try for PSUs but also in parallel have a job if the former didn't happen at first attempt.

As I said in the post, I feel government jobs should be treated as a plan B, and not plan A. You shouldn't abandon everything in life and only prepare for government jobs. That is the only problem, and IMO a lot of people (atleast from the core sector) do that.
