Also, they have well-made merch! I've been wearing my EFF jackets daily for 7 years, and my hat(s) for ~4 years :)

Data about how much money scammers are making using IMSI catchers to defraud people is finally starting to regularly surface

See recently this guy who made ~$40k USD in 2 months stealing credit card info via fake SMS messages

rival_elf,

Also, in response to this, the Taiwanese government introduced regulation around disallowing 2G on user devices

I can't find a link via their official website, only their fb: https://focustaiwan.tw/society/202308090022

rival_elf,

I've been working in phone radio security for ... 6 years now? And it wasn't until these last 1.5 years (mostly 2023) that there's been decent data about how much scammers are earning via these spamming campaigns where they drive around with the imsi catcher in their trunk.

rival_elf,

also thinking about how long I've been doing this and remembering when my mom asked me "why do you still work on phone security? don't you have any other skills?" lol

Really love the Signal Identification Wiki: https://www.sigidwiki.com/wiki/Signal_Identification_Guide

I tried to do a wireless CTF a few years ago and some of the problems involved identifying what types of signals we were seeing via waterfall patterns, and if I'd know about this wiki I could have made it further!

Reminder that the Emergency/Presidential Alert everyone in the US got today is easy to spoof because it's part of an unauthenticated cellular broadcast your phone will trust no matter who it comes from.

Here's the paper that details the attack, "This is Your President Speaking: Spoofing Alerts in 4G LTE Networks": https://par.nsf.gov/servlets/purl/10150578

Also malicious parties have begun taking advantage of this, see the recent attempts at disrupting the federal elections in the Philippines via fake emergency alerts.

I had no idea microwave ovens could cause this much interference, impacting even wifi and bluetooth.
