How Europeans and Americans use calendly:

🇺🇸 “Do you have any availability later today?”(Offered slots starting next day) vs.
🇪🇺 “Could you create some new slots further out next month?” (Slots open over three weeks)

(Generalization but two real questions)

I’ve been trying to make the case that US media can learn a ton from journalists who have navigated elements of autocracy elsewhere. People keep asking me what? Many examples from digital samizdat to comedy formats to safety.

Reading news coverage today about “professional agitators” reminded me of the Hong Kong protests of the past decade. I’m sure former colleagues who also covered those events and have since moved on can share plenty about how to not fall into the trap of convenient narratives served on a platter.

On #NPR reporting: weekly audience is relatively meaningless in a digital space because the offering is too fragmented and the brand is way too diffuse.

It’s not only not insightful, it’s also dangerous. If you’re in leadership and see it falling what do you do? Brand campaign! When that does not address the problem of working on new offering and making sure there’s a fit there.

Subscribers are far better metric: bundle and individual offerings, when possible.

“Democracy needs more than journalists to survive, and it might fall even if they do become activists in its defense. But they should understand what their role will be if it does fall: … collaborators with dictators or members of the resistance.”

“We are and have been in a new era of Media: The User Centric Era. This new age is defined by the ultimate power of the audience, not the gatekeepers. Media is now a suite of lifestyle services curated by the users, every day, in the system settings of their smartphones, with swipes of their thumbs, based on their moods at any given moment.” https://eshap.substack.com/p/hurt-so-good?publication_id=589601&utm_campaign=email-post-title&r=oqs&utm_medium=email

Survey on Navalny's death (caveats apply):

83% of Russians knew about Navalny's death the day it happened.

Only 25% believed the official narrative that he had been jailed for legitimate crimes.
