in my short time in the military I saw my orders get switched from a prestigious unit to a shitty unit so a colonel's baby boy could go to the prestigious unit instead, and a lieutenant with a colonel daddy (different colonel) get fast tracked into a prestigious special operations liaison position despite being a mediocre officer

meanwhile the army did nothing at all to try to keep the highly intelligent, high performing nobodies. if anything it saw them as a nuisance and punished them for standing out (not speaking for myself, I got medically separated, best thing that ever happened to me fuck the army). connections are everything, and if you don't have them you're fucked

the idea that the government is going to swoop in and pick out the high performers, whisk them off to a fancy NSA job or whatever, is movie bullshit. that's why we have geniuses capable of hyperfocus figuring out how to shave 0.01 second off a fucking mario speedrun instead of planning a manned mission to mars or designing the next generation of nuclear reactors

I remember being at a bookstore when I was 12 and looking at Harry Potter books and this weird Christian lady came up to me and told me they were evil because they promoted witchcraft. I was like "Yeah okay whatever" but after that something about those books was off putting to me, I never read a single page of them. Thanks weird Christian lady.

@PraxisOfEvil the only real criticisms I have of harry potter are it has a fundamentally liberal framework (like everything else) and it was written by a woman

the fandom around it is just batshit

I'm speaking only of the contents of the original 7 books, not the "pottermore" crap or the dumb shit rowling said later

@MeBigbrain @PraxisOfEvil trying to be strictly consistent in worldbuilding would've been stifling and a big mistake, of course she didn't have a fully fleshed out world when she started writing the first book so inconsistencies were inevitable. people who obsess over worldbuilding never finish anything

I don't know what your deus ex machina comments are referring to, because unless you're labeling dumbledore as "god" that doesn't happen

dumbledore was manipulating harry's life from before he was born; he molded him into a weapon to wield against voldemort and pulled the strings until the very end, even when he was dead. it's fairly sinister actually and if harry had died while taking voldemort with him, dumbledore would've considered that an acceptable sacrifice

the books explain everything you're talking about, that's not what deus ex machina is. voldemort can touch harry because he uses his blood in the potion to make his new body, that's explicit. time turners are heavily regulated specifically because they cause so many issues, also explicit. I don't expect YA novels to explore international wizard warfare, that's just out of scope. there are actual notable plot holes but this stuff is not it

I'm not putting the books on a pedestal, but being overly critical of the freshman efforts of a new writer is silly. finishing one book is hard and more than most aspiring writers ever manage. finishing a 7 book series that is cohesive and delivers a satisfying conclusion? that's extremely hard and most veteran writers can't do it

J.K. Rowling is a very skilled writer and nobody is going to convince me otherwise. pointing out that she's not perfect is not serious criticism
