Well boo.

Just got an email from TechSmith about switching Snagit and Camtasia to subscription-only models.

I have used both happily for years, and have been happy to pay for new versions when the upgrades have been notable.

But with TechSmith driving hard for Camtasia users to also use Audiate, and with more emphasis on AI stuff, I’m not interested in getting into a subscription-based ecosystem.

So… I guess it’s time to switch to Final Cut Pro.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a good replacement for Snagit. But since getting into developer documentation, I don’t really need to mark up UI screenshots anymore. So I guess I’ll just wait and see what, if anything, fills this gap by the time I need it again.

We have brought the cat for a CT scan and ultrasound to try to figure out why she has been limping. The place is an hour away, so we didn’t want to drive here, drive home, drive back, and drive home again. So we brought the ambulance and are hanging out while waiting for her to be done.

We haven’t spent a lot of time living in here because we haven’t been traveling due to the pandemic. But it is a surprisingly pleasant space. Spousey is now modeling some stuff to improve it.

I have done the computing I wanted to do.

Now I’m stretched out on the memory foam bed while a fan blows on me and I scroll my phone and occasionally glance outside.

If I have to kill ~5 hours waiting for the cat, this isn’t a bad way to do it.

I am sitting in the living room watching TV with the lights off.

I can see lightning bugs out the windows.

I had no idea during all my years living in Boston how much I would miss them. It takes me back to a place of childlike wonder to see them out there.

So glad we moved to Vermont. ❤️

Latest update in the docs consolidation project: a page that has only 1 section/example in some of our less complete docs sets is up to 5 sections/24 subsections in the consolidated page.

The page is now so long and comprehensive that you have to scroll the “On This Page” table of contents in the sidebar.

We’ve decided that’s too long and will split it into a few pages. But this project is already yielding great results by increasing the comprehensiveness of our docs.

As long as I am unemployed, I am trying to be a good house spouse.

The thing is, we long ago determined that am incapable of cooking or preparing food without making a mess. It doesn’t matter how hard I try.

That’s just frustrating. Frustrating to try and be clean, but then make the mess anyways. Frustrating to have to clean it up afterwards.

If we were rich, we would 100% hire a personal chef.

Attempting to fix my La Marzocco Linea Mini: a story in photos.

The easiest way to access this part (I.e. least likely to break something) is through the boiler. It’s that tiny little nozzle in the rear back of the boiler. Unfortunately, it’s inset from the boiler wall and is proving to be VERY difficult to grip. We’ve tried about 7 pairs of pliers and can either not grip it, or if we do grip it, the pliers just pull right off when we try to turn it.
This is all the screws and disassembly I had to do to get into the boiler. I lay things out in the order and relative locations in which I remove them so I can put them back together correctly.
The other option is to come in from the backside of the boiler. It’s possible to remove this whole assembly and access the flow restricter from inside this good piece. But everything fits just so, and apparently it’s very easy to break the copper tubing if you try to remove it from this side.

To be clearer, this is the part I’m trying to remove in order to replace it.

Symptom is: when I go to pull a shot, hardly any water comes out of the group head. The puck is barely damp after a minute. I clean the group head regularly, and cleaned it again before trying to replace this part.

🤞 this works, because I’m not sure what else to try.

I have a hard time believing that our cat is large.

This morning i asked wifey to take a pic as i carried the cat around while my tea steeped (as is her want).

The photo clearly shows a big cat. My mind refuses to to accept that my cat is a big cat.

(Also had way too much fun checking out the farm equipment while I was there… spousey kindly took pics for me.)

I’m standing next to a very large Pottinger NOVACAT front and rear mower. The yellow mower skirt is dirty and a little ragged. This is a well-used piece of equipment. This is also my preferred mower setup in the Farming Simulator video game series that I spend way too many hours playing. Another big smile from me checking out some of my favorite equipment in real life.

Today I touched the C++ example app I struggled so hard to write back in March. I had a few outstanding items to knock out.

It took me like an hour and everything just worked and it lured me into thinking maybe C++ is a perfectly civilized language once you know what you’re doing.

So I got overconfident and started writing a tutorial that extends the app. Now I’m like “wait, I can’t just do that thing I can do in Swift with just a few lines, I need to add a library or lengthy helpers?”

I don’t know if I need to cull the people I’m following or make more lists so I can select a subset of toots to view or what. But I just can’t keep up with my feed anymore. Gotta figure out how to manage that.

I am way behind in my feed again. Just don’t have time to keep up right now. And there’s a lot of negativity here. So I went and muted a bunch of keywords for a week.

I pruned several hundred posts from my feed, and hopefully won’t have as much negativity while I scroll.

I really love muting and temporarily muting keywords here.

Looks like most of you are team “tomorrow starts after sleep” so I guess I need to revise my usage of the word!

(But it’s rare that I’m up after midnight these days so maybe it’s not that important.)

I did a thing. I haven't soldered in like 20 years(?), but I want a light box to photograph the @noted stuff so that I can sell it to fine people like you.

I printed the box a while ago, but needed to install the lights and magnets. I've finished the lights, and installed 32 of 80 magnets.

I think i may have put too many lights though. It's SOOO bright (see second photo).

The more I work with GitHub’s API, the more annoyed I get about its design decisions.

I felt the same way about working with Mastodon’s API.

I really wish DX was a stronger concern for API development teams. Or that APIs were designed intentionally instead of grown organically. Either thing would improve the situation, I imagine.
